Question about V6 transmissions
« on: Jun 01, 2007, 04:59:22 PM »
88 4runner, 3.0 V6, SAS, blah blah...

A 3.4 V6 from a 96 runner is sitting on an engine stand waiting to go into my 4runner. I have access to the complete 96 to pillage everything I need for this swap. Also waiting to be installed are a pair of 23 spline 4 cyl t-cases. I have the option of using my 3.0 transmission or the trans from the 96 runner. Both are 5 speeds and both in similar, good condition. Is one transmission a better option than the other? If so, why? I'm in need of the adapter to bolt the 4 cyl cases to the 6 cyl transmission and wondering which one I should get. The 34-4GT or the 30-4GT?

They're both R150's... same tranny. Use whichever one is in better shape (I would guess the newer one)

I know they're both R150's but they're not the same. 3.4 tranny has a longer input and bellhousing which could change where my shifters come through, particularly the rear t-case shifter. I don't want to lose my rear heater. The longer bellhousing will also likely change where the t-case mounts up forcing me to modify any bolt on crossmember/skidplate. The clutch release cylinder is on the drivers side on the 3.4 and passenger side on the 3.0. This might allow me to use the factory exhaust crossover from the 3.4 if I can work the intermediate pipe around the front driveshaft. I'm sure there are other differences that I'm not aware of as well. Does anyone with experience with these 2 transmissions and this swap have any suggestions?

I just used mine transmission from my 1990 4runner.  The newer trans will move things back a inch or so, not sure on exact measurement.  I was going to use the newer trans because it had less miles on it but started looking and found it moves alot of stuff. With yours you can leave the slave cylinder in the same location and don't have to mess with moving the lines around.  it bolts right up and everything stays in the same location.  All you need is the 3.4 flywheel, clutch, pressure plate.  Then use the 3.0L throwout bearing.  Why you use the 3.0 throwout bearing is the 3.4 is longer. and will not work properly.
