Flatbed designs and pics!!
« on: May 13, 2007, 01:09:09 PM »
I'm looking for a flatbed design.  I've done a search on the site, but most of them have a step up design for tire clearance.  What I want is a total flat bed design.  So, I can use sideboards for hauling debris, garbage or firewood.  I also want to use a rack system on it, for when I need to haul some lumber or a ladder.  I want to have two sideboards, a tall and a short design, depending on what I want to haul.  So, how far above the frame should a build it?  For tire articulation!  But at the same time I want to keep the flatbed as low as I can for center of gravity!  I got a basic design in my head, but I haven't put it down on paper yet.  And I was wanting to use wood for the decking!  So things won't rattle in the bed when driving!   So post up some pics and some designs for me to get a better idea of what parameters I'll be looking at!

Thanks, Cheesemaker

Here are some pics  I think 2x3 rect tube with round post sideboard and rack will work for you . if you make it right you can pull up a 35" under the bed like marlin for a spare too. Following pics borrowed from where i found them ;-)

I'm looking at one like Rednck1980's!  I like the total flatbed design.  So what size of tires you running and how much distance is between the frame and the bottom of the bed frame?  And how far have you had the tires stuffed into the flatbed?  And at rest how much distance is between the tire and bottom of the flatbed?  I'm not building a full on rock crawler, but a truck that is capable of doing the Rubicon and haul a load of firewood around my place when needed.  A more universal style of flatbed.  I love some of the other styles that were posted, and I appreciate those pics.  Thanks!

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

Cheesemaker show us a pic of the truck it is going on. Body lift?  Lift? Tire size? If you can find some shelving from a home depot it is rect tube with a drop edge for wood.  Works good for flatbeds. you can get pockets and other stuff from redneck trailer

Tire size: 37's
Distance between frame and bed: 8 in
Tires have been stuffed all the way into the bed
Distance between tire and bed: 9in
If i could build it over again i would make it somewhere between 10-12 inches off the frame instead of 8 because the tires rub really bad.
