I don't see a question mark anywhere. What are you trying to figure out?

I would go 4.88s........5.29 might be wound up a little too much on the highway

agree'd, if you plan on sticking with 33's i'd go 4.88's

your gonna lose alot more gas w/ 5.29's and that engines gonna be at higher rpms...

I used to see 5th gear in my 82' with a stock 22R on 37's w/ 5.29's

So 33's and 4.88's should be fine.

Yup, I'd go with 4.88's and 33's on a dd, now if it is just an occasional use vehicle get the 5.29's

Judging by how you use your truck, I'd have to say 5.29's is the way to go. 4.88 gets you back around the stock gear ratio, so imagine trying to take a loaded truck with stock gears and tires to wherever you take your truck. That four banger would be struggling. So overgear it a bit and expect to have worse gas mileage on flatland and better mileage in the hills.

I have 4.88's on my 83 with a 5spd.

I tow and I have a cab-over camper.

love the 4.88's  just a little lower than stock as it works out.

alt? don't know. never had it over 6K.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

I am going to go against the grain on this one.

I agree that 4.88s are good for both 33s and 35s, but in race's case, this rig is being driven on mountain roads? (high altitudes) and he rarely gets into 5th gear. Combine that with towing of equipment and the fact that he is rarely on the freeway, I say its 5.29s all the way. 5.29s also leave the door open in case you decide on running larger tires in the future. If any one has daily driven a carb 22R in high elevations then you know how much it sucks.

I wonder what are the rpm's of the gears 4.88s and 5.29s
Here are some speed estimates using my super old Vehicle Speed Calculator:

Gearing    31" @ 3000 rpm    33" @ 3000    35" @ 3000    37" @ 3000

I'm glad someone has been to high alt and knows what it's like coming from some racing friends and the corrected alt can jump to 8000+ and that's at 4600 non corected I work on boat's and we fight this all day/every year I still after all these years have to give MARLIN AND HIS CREW MANY THANKS FOR DRIVING MY TRANS TO ME IN UT! you guy's are the best! as for the gears I'm for the 5.29s with big mike but when I do this I also will be doing a bigger cam but can't see that as big as the gears when I'm going hunting loaded to the max I'm at speed as fast as I dare to go at 60-65 mph as long as th rpm's are around 3000 the truck runs the flats great but those over passes and grades are a killer I'm haulin for three and two dogs and all the bull crap with a shell and a boat so if it's reving to far in 4th there is the 5th gear that has rarley been used if in 5th its possibly over reving I'll be glad to slow down and have another budweiser or just relax and cruise I go at night and leave early morning not to stress the truck or me and 60-65 is ok for max speed I think 5.29.s? I looked at the speed and rpm's of the chart aove and I wish I was going off the 4.88's but am off from that. thanks for all the help race.

huh?  :dunno:

Good choice man, I hope everything works out.

BTW, how long ago did we bring that trans out? I'm willing to wager that Marlin will still remember the street you live on.

i say go with the 529s as well..... not jumping on a bandwagon with mike, but in looking @ the responses to this thread, everyone says 488s... but then they all live relatively close to sea level.....

We don't need more poets - we want mechanics.

I don't care how illiterate or grammatically incorrect a person is - personally, I can read your writing.  I like it.  Who cares if some people don't or can't?  There will always be some that don't want to listen anyway.

So don't go away.  Have a beer, relax, and keep posting.

We don't need no stinkin grammer!  Tell us about the huntin!
