1984 4runner SR5, Crawler/Daily driver, Chevy 4.3L V6 swap, nicely Built, Dual stock cases, EZ locker Rear, 30 spline Longs in front

Well, I'm putting my baby up for sale.  Got married a couple years back and just had our first baby, so I’ve decided to move over to an FJ80, better for the family, so I will consider trades for 95-97 FJ80’s.  Truck is in Fresno, CA

History –
I bought this truck in stock condition in early 1999 from the second owner in Willow Glen, (San Jose), CA with 73,000 original miles.  The truck has 117,000 miles now. 



The original owner was from Costa Mesa.  I have all previous owners paperwork going back to the original sale including; window sticker, original owner's manual, owners driving guide, brochure etc, and all services performed.  You can see why it had low miles; he only drove about 7K miles a year.  My idea was always to build a crawler from a low mile, nice condition truck, so I would know that I was starting off in great condition.  I drove it as my daily driver for 2 years until 2001 when I bought a commuter, that’s why it still has relatively low miles.  I’ve only gone on truly only 1 or 2 wheelin trips a year, so it still hasn’t seen a lot of use.  I did the engine swap to a Chevy V6 in 2004. 


Drivetrain/Axles -

Engine - 1989 4.3L TBI V6, smogged and CA legal.
(also have spare Cadillac air filter intake; would be an easy beginning for snorkel set-up).
Tranny - 700R4 tranny.  Lokar 12" shifter http://www.lokar.com/interior_pages/products/shifters_knobs/images/standardshifter.jpg , Be-Cool Radiator w/ fan, (mounted on front fender, fan not wired)
   A/A T/C adapter
   Downey Off-Road Speed sensor
T-Case – Dual stock cases – Marlin #617
Lengthened stock front driveshaft in front
1996 front driveshaft lengthened for rear, (Marlins suggestion of a 96)
Shortened stock rear shaft for trail spare

Front axle:    4.10 R&P open diff.
30 spline Longfield, (never broken a birf though)
   3” wheel spacers – Marlins
   2” drop down hanger
Rear axle:    IFS rear axle Swap
   4.10 R&P - Detroit EZ locker
Diff Breathers Front and rear


Engine Swap -

The Chevy S10 4.3L TBI Engine swap was done back in late 2004, and I bought the engine/tranny as a complete package directly out of another Toyota truck that had been smogged in CA.  Included in the package was Complete engine w/700R4 tranny, A/A transfercase adapter, Downey’s vehicle speed sensor, advanced adapters 4 core radiator.  I bought the Lokar nostalgic 12” shifter so it would work in the stock location as the shift boot, looks very clean.  Drivetrain lifted about 1 ¾” at engine and crossmember.  I used a Fuel Injected 4runner gas tank with an AC Delco (OME from Chevy) fuel pump inside the fuel tank.  I also made a new 3/8” fuel line from tank to intake, to accommodate higher fuel rate of the TBI.  As far as electrical goes; the previous 4.3 owner showed me how easy it was to wire up so I didn’t go the route of a howell or painless wiring harness.  Basically the 4.3 factory harness attaches to the ECM which I located under the dash on the passenger side.  There are a few wires which are either hooked up to power or ground from the ECM.  There is also a wire for the “Check Engine Light,” which I used an LED on top of the dash, (should be visible in guage pic).  Temp gauge wired no prob.  Had to use an aftermarket gauge for oil pressure.  Fuel gauge line fit the Toy tank plug perfect.  Tach gauge is hooked up.  Mechanical fan works perfect never gets warm.  Previous owner didn’t have a shroud and said it didn’t need one, but I made an decent aluminum shroud and it’s never overheated.

SR5 =  tiltometer, altimeter, PS, PB, tilt, (CC removed during engine swap), gauge package; speed, tach, temp, volt, fuel, oil, (aftermarket oil guage).

Uniden 40ch CB with Firestick antenna


Suspension/Lift/Tires -

Front:    Modified stock Toyota rear springs up front – 6 leaf pack, soft, very little lift. Relocates front axle 2.5” forward
   2" drop down from frame
   All Poo Greasable shackles
   Ubolt flip kit
Marlin shock towers 
Shocks Front: Poly Performance’s BBCS – 15”

Rear:    Chevy ½ tons, shackle moved back
   All Poo Greasable shackles
   Ubolt flip kit
   Shocks Rear; Rancho 9012’s  - Wide “ / \ “ mounted pattern for soft ride

Body Lift;
2" UHMW Polyurethane body lift – 4crawler (Roger Brown)

Tires/Wheels;
35” Pro-comp Xterrain’s on 15x10 black steel wheels, less than 3000 miles on them. (35” BFG Mud T/A spare)


Brakes -

New Rotors in Front back in 2000.
Bigger IFS drums in rear
Wilwood brake prop valve, in rear
FJ80 Brake master cylinder


Steering -

High Steer Crossover steering kit – Marlins (gold anodized = bling!)
IFS steering box

*Newly added*  The truck is due for a smog, which I will have done in the next week, and should pass with flying colors.  The truck does have a bit of rock rash basically on the lower right rear quarter panel, I’ve basically touched them up but never done any body work, (pics to come on Wednesday).  The top of the cab and hood have been repainted because of the clear coat pealing off, (pics coming Wednesday).  The windshield has a circular crack down in the bottom corner of the drivers side windshield.  Driver and passenger window were lightly tinted by previous owner.  Toyota had A/C but it hadn’t worked since I bought it.  There is an estimate the previous owner had done for work needed.  The Chevy Engine has an A/C compressor and I have the factory hoses that just need to be retrofitted to each other, I’ve just never got around to it.  Asking $8400 Or best offer.  Truck is in Fresno, CA      Email me @ jeffmackey1@hotmail.com

The main thing it is missing now is a sway bar with these soft springs and shocks.  Either here or on Pirate there are links for sway bars options for 84-89 p/u's and 4runner's and such using tacoma sway bars.   I have the stock 84 sway bar that now does not fit due to the forward position of the front axle, but there are posts on Pirate4x4 of guys using tacoma sway bars on early toys...
