1st Gen. Toyota SAS (2wd to 4wd)Progress has resumed

Well I've had this 1979 20R 2wd Short Bed Pick-up since about '97. My uncle gave it to me when he moved to Vegas. For the past almost 10 years the truck has sat on the side of my house. I think I've put at the most 200 miles on it  in that time, but they have all been hard.
 Since I got the truck, my cousin and I have tossed around the idea of converting it to 4wd, but we never went any farther then that.  After helping my cousin build his '90 v-6 truck, and helping my buddy Skippy build his EB, and then riding shotgun with them and our other buddies I decided to just build what I had. In Aug. I bought a new Cummins 6spd. for Tow/DD duties, since I had been riding my Shadow rain or shine for the past year, and didn't want to have to rely on the toy to get me to and from the trail. Half the mileage of the shadow, but so much easier for a lazy loser like me .
 Here's a list I made in excel of all the parts and tools I have purchased so far for this and the prices and where they were bought. Some things are not included, because this is just my price check list.
 



 So far its just going to be a generic Toy build. I'm not worried about street legality and will eventualy be getting a green sticker, so the fenders are going to be hacked up, and hopefully by the end of the summer I'll be going Propane to replace the carb.

Here's the specs. I'm building the truck to right now:
-Wheel Base:102" now/ will be 110"
-Front Susp.: Jeep wagoneers
-Rear Susp.: 63" Chevies with slip-twist traction bar
-'83 Front Axle: 1.5" spacers,30 spl. Longs, Longfield Chromo Hub Gears, Aussie, 4.10s(5.29s later), ARP knuckle/Hub studs, Housing Truss,   Knuckle Ball gussets, Pipe cap gear guard, button head 3rd. mounting Hardware, 4cyl. 3rd.
-'90 rear housing: 4.10s(5.29s later), Full pipe cap cover, Welded Carrier,
-Tires/Wheels: 36-13.5-15 Iroks, 15x8 3.75 BS Crager Nomads
-L43 2wd. Trans converted to 4wd
-2.28 crawl box w/Marlin MC07 adapter, Marlin 4.7 T-Case gears, FROR Twin Stick
-Stock 20r minus unnessicary vac./wiring(Propane this summer, and maybe Hopped up rebuild this winter)
-Stripped Interior, 12voltguy panels after rewire

And a few more pics of things I have gotten done so far.
Built this front diff guard out of an 8" weld on pipe cap.


I got the rear axle form my cousin for buying bearings for his 9". The guy he bought the truck it came out of from blew up the gears in the v-6 chunk, and threw the carrier away. Replaced it with a 4cyl. heres his attempt at repairing the hole from the shrapnel. It looks worse from the inside.

And heres my fix. I cut the stock cover off, and welded a pipe cap in its place

I'm not done with it yet, here's what I plan to due to it.

Then I'm going to get rid of the drain plug, and give it a mild shave.

Now that is the first use of a pipe cap on a toyota axle I've ever liked. Nice job.

I got a good handle on this thing, its not the first time that I've done any of the things involved in this build.

  I've been collecting parts since mid Aug. right after I bought my Dodge. I've been moving pretty slow up until now. But I'm hoping to get my 2wd tranny cross-member cut out this weekend, and getting a temp. one in so that I can get my trans. and T-cases in and off the floor so that the truck is movable.
 I wish I had some of the tools at home that I have at work, I work on my truck parts at lunch, but an hour isn't long enough to get much done, most of my time is wasted bringing parts into the shop, and back out to my truck.

That hole is the only way to get heat into the cab. And it lets you see if the front axle is getting hung up on anything. Skippy(Shane) lost intrest in getting anything done since we started narrowing the rear. We started planning out the front coil-overs, but after about 30mins. he got bored with it and I don't think he's touched it since around Oct. The bed sides are just hanging there, and the front inner fenders have big holes we cut for the coil-overs, but the coil-overs are sitting in the corner, where they have been since he bought them.

I'm not giving myself a very strict budget on this thing, but I have been keeping track of how much I spend on an Excel spread sheet that I made.. I also made a page to keep track of the orders I have made with different vendors so that I can easily reference part #s and when the orders were made.

It looks like a lot of work, then when you start doing stuff it seems like you get one thing done and then five other things pop up. Then you gotta plan stuff out so that you dont have to take apart something that you just put together so that you can complete another part of the project.
  Its all worth it in the end.

Shane actually cut the other side and got them tacked up when i was there last week.  i am not sure if he got them welded up or not.

I'm glad to hear he did something with the damned thing, its been about a month since I've been over there. Last time I talked to him he was telling me that I needed to get my truck going so that he didn't have to work on his. Did he ever get his passenger side wheel hub off to replace the bearings?

Today I got a decent amount of work done, not a lot but I'm happy with it. I was going to cut out the transmission cross-member and get my tranny and t-cases installed before I started digging into the suspension to keep the truck moveable. But I spaced out the fact that the torsion bars are anchored to the tranny cross-member, and I didn't feel like cutting the center section of it out only to find out that there wouldn't be room for the t-case. While I was under the truck planing out what I was going to do I figured that since the tranny was out I would take a look at the clutch and the pilot bearing. The clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel all looked good, but here's what I found.


Pilot bearing is toast.
Since I couldn't cut out the tranny cross-member with out removing the torsion bars I figured I might as well just remove all of the front suspension.

I also got the rear axle and springs out.


Thats about as far as I will go until my dad replaces the acetylene bottle he loaned out and never got back, I hate using the sawzall or cutoff wheels when I could be using my torches.

Didn't get much done today. I got most of the interior out and began mocking up the suspension. I should be able to hit 110" WB pretty easily.






Here's what I plan on doing for the front hanger

(EDIT: Changed 3/16" to 3/8")
I plan on cutting out the stock rear cross-member and adding one at the end of the frame rails so that I can put the rear shackle mount as far to the rear as possible.

instead of 3/16" for that hanger use 3/8".  being as it will be the first thing to hit anything you will want it beefy.  I bent the 3/8" on my last truck.

Last night I ordered Spring mounts forthe rear and shackle mounts for the front and rear from ballistic fabrication. I could have built the stuff myself, but I'm lazy, and don't fell like building these things when I could get them for this cheap.

Since I'm still waiting on suspension mounts I helped out my cousin with his truck yesterday. We cut the front clip off a few months ago and he tubbed the front when he built his exo, and mounted the fenders to the tubing. I think he narrowed the front about 12".



We are trying to use the stock grille and side marker lights with out the head light bezels. It fits pretty good with the front being narrowed. We just had to flip the grille up side down so that it would math the angles of the side markers.
