tacoma SAS with toyota axle?
« on: Jan 29, 2007, 02:49:10 PM »
Thinking on retiring my 91 toyota D.D. and starting over with a 99 tacoma ex cab with the 3rz 5 speed. My toy axles are built with lockers front and rear and 5.29's so i'd like to be able to use the front axle and maybe the rear third if it'll fit.

Bascily does a w56 bolt up to the w59 bellhousing from the taco to give me the passenger drop needed?

Also would my 8" third fit the taco rear axle?

For the front width difference i'm just going to run my IFS wheel hubs then my 1.5" spacers and that should give me the 60" to match the rear. Add some 30 spliners and i think the axle will hold up for a while.
91 toy truggy on h2 injection, hacked n chopped n locked n SAS'd rolling 36" IROKS........doubler comming soon

I can't remember for sure if the W56 will bolt up to the W59, but for some reason it seems like it will??? Just remember, you'll have a weaker transmission. Your rear 3rd WILL NOT BOLT UP, PERIOD, END OF STORY! You can use the rear ring and pinion on an e-locker 3rd member, but a 3RZ w/ a TRUE TRD package is EXTREMELY RARE. The stock rear Tacoma 3rd is much stronger than what you've got anyway, so why mess w/ it? Just get a lunchbox locker, slap it in and call it done. Or you could always go w/ an ARB ;).

As I tested earlier this evening, the bell housing on the back of a 22re 5spd (w56) will bolt directly up to the bell housing of my 3RZ (w59). So, yes, you can put a w59 behind your 2.7l 3RZ.
But this setup is weaker than the w59.

I am looking at the 27-4gt adapter so I can stick with my w59, and then step up to duel cases and such down the road. But I'm still confused.

Why bother swapping thirds when you can swap the entire axle housing with thirds and axles in it. The Taco and post 85 rear axle is the same width, same axle shaft, and same brake drum/shoes.

This is a false statement...

This is what they really are

The 79-85 rear axle housings are 55"
The 86-95 rear axle housings are 58"
The 95.5-04 (tacoma) rear axle housings are 60"

Also from BigMike:
Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 trucks/4runners
55.1" wide, '60-83 FJ40
57.9" wide, '81-87 FJ60
58.5" wide, '86-95 trucks/4runners
60" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
62.2" wide, '91-92 FJ80
63" wide, '93-97 FZJ80
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

RIP Kyota.... you are the man

GET IT!!!

This is a guy I met on the Rubicon that bought a 2WD, 3rz 4runner and then swapped in a W56 and mini truck dual cases, so he was able to use a Toyota front axle.

Yes you can, not as strong as getting marlins R-series bellhousing and going that route. Then again i had a w56 behind a 4.3L never had an issue

Also would my 8" third fit the taco rear axle?

No, do not even try not only is the width different, it is a different axle all together. From what i recall it is the 8.4 cause the ring gear is bigger

For the front width difference i'm just going to run my IFS wheel hubs then my 1.5" spacers and that should give me the 60" to match the rear. Add some 30 spliners and i think the axle will hold up for a while.

My first question is how you are dealing with the tcase crossmember since you are changing the truck from driver to passenger side drop on the tcase? Exhaust issue? Plumbing issues? sounds like a lot of work

The tacoma frame is wider then the sas kit from marlin. I think that the frame is 3" wider if I remember right front range offroad makes a nice hanger kit for the tacoma that is what I have on my truck I also did my sas with a 1984 front axle housing with 1.5 " wheel spacers to match the 8.4 rear end I will post pictures later today. I hope that this helps you

As I tested earlier this evening, the bell housing on the back of a 22re 5spd (w56) will bolt directly up to the bell housing of my 3RZ (w59). So, yes, you can put a w59 behind your 2.7l 3RZ.
But this setup is weaker than the w59.

Where did you get that info from? It bolts up, but as for weaker, I dont think so. I ran that combo for 10 years while driving on freeways and crawling the Hammers and never had a problem. If Marlin thinks its weaker than i shut the heck up, but they are both W series and are almost Identical inside. Thats what I've seen FIRST hand.
