programmable EFI for 22RE and 22RTE $475
« on: Nov 11, 2006, 10:09:30 PM »
I'm in Austin, TX area...

I've developed a fully drop system for 85+ 22RE and 22RTE.  The system is megasquirt (nothing new there) - but it's now fully integrated with stock toyota ignition and can be installed in under 5 minutes, no additional wires.

This is a great system if you've got a sigificantly modified 22re or 22RTE and don't want to pay $1500 for LC's SDS.

This system is not-half assed.  It's completely tested -not another halfway done megasquirt or simply a stand alone harness.
I don't sell megasquirt - I refer to a high quality vendor who configures properly for the toyota - cost is $350.
I sell the harness for $125.

If you've got a stroker, want to run a turbo, or want to get some RELIABLE power out of your 22RTE, this is an excellent system and probably the most important modification you can make.

Complete control over 144 points of fuel, 144 points of timing.  Complete engine tuning on your laptop!
PS, I'm also happy to tell you how to build this yourself for free, if you want to take the time.
I've got 2 of these, one setup for a stock 22RE, the other for a turbo 22RE w/o AFM.
I'm happy to tune megasquirt for free for the close to stock applications.
Stripped down "painless wiring style" buggy harnesses are also available for around $75.

Yes.  I've completed my 2nd megasquirt project (photos above) just to prove that it can be done on a stock application, using stock wiring, keeping everything simple.  This setup is great for stock 22RTE and 22RE motors that are substantially modified.

My 3rd project is a 22RE turbo, motor is sitting in the garage.  I used a slightly different harness that allows me to do the following:
1) Use a wideband.  I'm using LC-1, but others can be used.  With a wideband, you can autotune to a specific Air/Fuel.
2) Remove the AFM.  There's a fuel pump issue that has to be addressed as well as the loss of the stock air temp senor.
The harness for this is very similiar, but does have a few extra wires.

Tuning and logging software are available free for this setup.  All you need is a laptop and a serial cable, not the following are shots from a non toyota application, but the interface is the same:

Photos the a similar harness setup.  This one is for the turbo motor above.
It's +4 wires:
1) Wideband analog 02
2) +12v switched (to run a relay)
3) Ground
4) Manifold temperature sensor (as I'm removing my AFM)

with this last pic.  what relay are you running of the wire.  also  the wideband o2 sensor  do you just need to buy the wideband sensor???  Does the program read it already?  ie could I use the laptop as the guage and not buy a wideband guage cuz Im broke.  I keep coming back to this  Im deffinetly tempted.  I just dont think I have enought I might have to build The harness on my own,  do you have a write up you worked off of.  I have my old 22re ecu I could use that  conector,  and Where can I get the other connector frys probably.  I Might be able to afford it if I can get the harness myself.  can you still run ac stuff off this and  all the other stuff the ecu needs?  I might get it running smog it then get this stuff swaped on.

For the first harness: If you're talking about the black wire, I'm not running a relay.  That black wire is the negative side of the 02 sensor heater.  The 02 sensor heat already has a relay in the EFI system, I just ground it to away from megasquirt itself, because some connections can cause electrical "noise".

For the last harness: The red wire activates a relay.  I can use that relay for anything.. It's just specific to my truck.  The green wire is for a GM manifold absolute temp (not necessary) and the other wire is for a wideband O2 (again, not 100% necessary), last an additional ground.

For the 22RE stock, I'm using the existing narrowband sensor.  If you're dead broke, you could get away with running a narrowband sensor, but you'll have to be very careful - it should *always* read rich under boost and you'll have to be very reasonable with the amount of boost you run.
A stock 22RTE runs a narrowband, so it shouldn't be an issue - Air fuel becomes very important as you put more load (and push more HP) through the motor.

The wideband I've purchased is an LC-1 unit.  Retail is $199.  Megasquirt can read it just fine, but it needs to be told that it's a wideband.

The purpose of oxygen sensor (narrow band or wideband) isn't for a display.   The ECU actually corrects your air fuel based on what the sensor is reading.  Besides, you don't need a gauge - if you've got a laptop, you can monitor oxygen sensor output.

I didn't work off a write up.  I worked off of understanding megasquirt, understanding the toyota ignition system and understanding the wiring diagram for the truck.
With the write up, it tells you how to build the same harness that I'm selling.  Go to:
www.22returbo.com, click on "custom EFI" - first link at the top, it's a word document.

The "other" connector is called a DB37 - female.  Frys does carry it, make sure you get one that has pins you solder and then push in.  Do not get the ribbon type connector.

The big advantages to running with stock ignition are:
1) Tach works.
2) AC pull up works.  You won't loose your AC.

I don't have a serial port either, I'm using a USB adapter myself...  I've even seen posts of some people using a bluetooth adapter on the megasquirt, giving you wireless control..
