hybrid propane engine
« on: Jul 27, 2006, 01:35:18 PM »
hey wha are the chances of doing a 22/20r hybrid and then running a propane crb setup on top of that, my ideas ar .30 over 22r bottom end with keith black high comp. pistions, a 20r head w/ largevalves, heavy springs and a good low bottom end cam then an offenhauser intake manafold off of a 22r then to top it all off a propane carb set up. howdoes that sound what are your guys's suggestions

I thought the 22r intake would not work with the 20r?  No personal experience, just thought I came across that somewhere.  What would you use for a mixer/vaporizer combo?

a 22r intake wont work on a 22r, however a 20r/22r hybrid means using a 22r old style block and a 20r head usually

There's a lot to be said for buying something ready to go... but I don't think you save $700 worth of time in the gotpropane kit, when used Ebay setups are available online for $100-200...

 ::)

Yes, I have done a LOT of research, & run two different propane setups.  The engine I ran it on was a 258 in a Jeep CJ, but there's really no difference.  There are quite a few people that have actually used the impco 225 mixer on 22rs with good results-- that is what I used on my CJ.  I watch ebay periodically (about once a month or so), just to keep tabs on the cost of a propane conversion.  I sold the impco 225 for $75 on Ebay.

Currently I have an impco 300a that I am unsure if I will try to make work on my current Toy, or sell it in favor of a slightly easier to bolt-up mixer.  (I ended up running dual fuel on my CJ-- hence where the 300a came from).

Here is a good link on how to tune the mixer/vaporizer: http://www.wildyoats.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=12585 (since you seem to be concerned with me enlightening you with my propane knowledge, I figured I would add to the tech).  FWIW, I am sore4x4 on there.  Also, I have received an email from the guy saying the setup works great.  He spent about $600 on his setup, but he went the new route.

Here are some additional links that might be helpful.  Please note, these are not really the best links for hooking up the mechanicals, but rather some informative reading on lpg as a fuel (as a generality).

Lol, yeah, I know what you mean.  Unfortunately, the rig is pretty much in pieces at the moment, hence why I am on the site ;).  Here are a couple threads on the build progress though:

i am doing the same setup as we speak. the 22r intake will not work on 20 head. and if you use the 20 head you have to get a 22r carb base plate and then get a 22r to 20r adaptor plate from lcengineering. other than that it should work great.

man it seems no one does research on this :pokinit:. the offey intake was bilt for spliting primarys and secondarys through out rpm band it is suspost to give u a cooler  charge of gasoleen  and they flowed a little better now in my experience i have had a 22 R, 20 R,and the  21 RU  i have ben  running on propane for three weeks now and i far as i can tell it wont help much to put on a offey with propaine it dont matter popane will run with a stock intake just fine. and i just dont c the point of putting an offey on a propane  it wouldent be able to tell the diffenence

and i am talking about a offey  dual plane you can by a c series for a weber but it does not have dual ports for your  primarys and secondarys
