I run 5.29's with 35's on the street and can hold 5th pretty good, if they were 4.88's I think it bog down and not hold 5th. Of course up hills have to down shift to 4th and sometimes 3rd. My truck is a 91 with a 22re also. Run 38's on the trail and haven't had any problems with the gears.

I'd go with the 5.29's, 4.88's would be putting you back to stock basically.  I have an 89 extra cab with the 22RE and 5spd I run 4.88's with 31's.  I rev pretty high on the on the highway but it is nice and low geared.  I think that if I ran a 32 inch tire it would be just right, but I cant fit a 32 inch tire on my truck as it sits (kinda sucks).

Another vote for 5.29s. If you are thinking about 35s or larger, you are going to need the gears. As for strength, I went with Longfield's cryoed Yukon Gears. Same or lower price as the other vendors, but you get the added bonus of the cryo. ;)

I'll break the vote for 5.29s and HIGHLY recommend 4.88s, especially more so if this is a daily driver.

Not only are not not going to find a 35" tire that is exactly 35", but they will soon wear to a 34" and even a 33" tire, like my 35" MTRs that only measure 33.25".

You said that you will not got any bigger then 35s, well then you don't need anything lower then 4.88s. If you run 5.29s + ~34" tall tires, then you will be about + 300 rpm over stock, so running 4.88s will correct that and return you to about stock ratios. People always say "Yeah, 5.29s + 35" tires will be the same as stock gearing" well, that is true if you have 35" tall tires, which again, is less likely the case. You could try a set of 36" tires and 5.29s.....

Where do you live? CO? How often are you pulling hills? If you are in a primarally flat area, then again, just go with 4.88s. You will get better gas mileage while cruising, engine won't rev as much = lasts longer, tranny and tcase wont rev as much = lasts longer.

I am running 5.29s because I dream of having 37" tires some day. When I first put in the 5.29s, I had worn out 33"s that measured 31.5". MAN DID THAT SUCK. 3600 rpm just to do 75 MPH. That was almost as bad as my MR2 (4400 rpm for 80 mph).

I would hate to run 5.29s with 33"s, even if they were a true 33" tire. Now if this is a trail rig only, and it never sees the pavement, then yes, by all means run 5.29s.

Now you said you are "SLOWING DOWN (LIKE I AM NOW)" so what are you running right now? stock gears with 33"s right? Going to 4.88s will make a HUGE difference and you will do just fine on the open road

Well, the difference between 3.73 and 4.88 will be night and day. I have had experience with 5.29+33s, 4.88+35s, 5.29+35s, and 5.29+37s. For me and my driving style, 4.88+35s act the same way as 5.29s+37s. My truck right now is 5.29+35s, and when I do snow runs, I borrow my father's 37s, and MAN I like the 5.29+37" combo MUCH better then 5.29+35" combo. The RPMs are down with the 37s and the gears are a bit longer, especially 1st gear, which is a worthless gear when combined with 5.29+35".

I tell my friends who want to stay at 35"s to run 4.88s. I guess this is more because of the better fuel mileage and less wear on moving parts this side of the rear axle. When I am in the hills, the 5.29s of course work better because the gears are shorter, but I only run the hills once a month or less.

Anyways, it's always good to hear two sides of a story

I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

vote for 5.29s.

If you ever do want to go bigger than a 35"tire in the futurre you wont have to worry about regearing again.  I am putting 5.29s in my truck as we speak with 33s and I dont have plans to change my tires for a while.  But when I do atleast I will have more options.

4.88 and 37"s will be able to use 5th, most gears with 35"s will be able to use 5th. People think that gears make a huge difference, yes they do, but it is not a big deal. I vote 4.88.

Too add more questions to the gear ratio thread here ya go! I have a 95 4runner 3.slow and I am planning on swapping a Ford 347 Stroker engine in it with a C4 auto, I don't know if the C6 would fit easier so I am going with the smaller C4, Now here is the question: I have been planning on running 4.88's with 33's or 35's but how bad will that effect the C4 tranny, and another thing what do you think of just keeping the stock toy 5 speed over the c4, yeah the last question should probably have it's own thread but oh well.    :usa:
Wifey rolled my 4Runner so now I get to build it the way I want.
