4x4 vs 4x2 Benefits and Drawbacks??
« on: Oct 23, 2003, 10:49:44 PM »
Okay, I am in need of some serious truck/suv advice.  I am looking into purchasing a V6 engine vehicle with the option of adding on a 4x4.  I wanted to know some comparison info.

What are the benefits of each?
Drawbacks of each?
Do you get any every-day driving perk with a 4x4, or just off-roading?
Can you go off road in a 4x2 on dry easy conditions?
Which tows better? (Such as 1 horse in a 2 horse trailer)
Better gas mileage?
Lower insurance?
Safety?
Handling/Ride/Noise?
Suspension?
Repair/Cost of Maintenance?

??? :lipsrsealed: :screwy: :headscratch: :dunno:  ???
As you can see.... I don't know much on this issue.  TEACH ME!!! :-)

Thank you in advance for any help or advice offered on the issue!

Well the 4x4 usally will hold resale value better then a 2wd
The 4x4 is nice to have for snow, ice, towing on steep uphill gravel roads or for stump pulling always that just in case need..
You can go off road in a 2wd but the fronts hang low and bottom out, won't go where you want to go and just belong on the street unless driving ivan stewart style
Other then that I think the 2wd is a better tow rig if you don't tow into places that you need 4x..The fuel milage is better. The insurance is lower.Maint is usally about the same if you don't use the 4x4.The cost is about the same other then tires are more in a 4x4..I just feel a truck is worth less with out 4x4.I always am thankfull for having it.I tow in alot of sand and snow so its pretty much a must for me..Not to mention 4x4's are just sooooo kewl! :beerchug:
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

:driving: :driving:Yes i agree that 4x4 is needed for a lot of things but not all people need the ability to and funchtion of 4x. If you are doing a 2wd your cost to convert is way up there. You may want to think about what the perpose of the vehicle is going to be. If you plan to go camping and hunting, maybe even the 4x trip then 4x is the only way to go. Best bet is to see if any of your buds have a 4x and go wheeling try it you may like it. Then your hooked. If it is going to be a truck to get hay and move the hourses around then 2x is just great. 4wd is a bit more costly to maintain due to the fact that you have more moving parts transfercase, drive line, differencial, and more weight to transport your millage is going to be a bit less and your tires are going to cost more. But these are all things that you have to think about and to see if they are needed or just for fun.  Hope this bit of info helps our your brain. As for me 4x is the only way to travel it is a lifestyle not just a mindset. You live the 4x dream of having mud and rocks under your tires.  Good luck in your hope to find the right vehicle.

What are the benefits of each?
4x4, you have 4 wheel drive if you need it

Drawbacks of each?
usually costs more for tranmission work but about the same otherwise

Do you get any every-day driving perk with a 4x4, or just off-roading?
not unless you get a jeep, then you have full timeallwheel drive or 4wd

Can you go off road in a 4x2 on dry easy conditions?
sure ever see the baja 500

Which tows better? (Such as 1 horse in a 2 horse trailer)
Better gas mileage?
the 4 wd will tow better due to usually haveing deeper gearing, and may actually get better mileage during towing than the 2wd because of the lower gearing, unless the 2wd has a "towing package"

Lower insurance?
Safety?
you need something with at least 12 inch brakes front and rear and a V-8 or at least a inline 6  like jeeps have

Handling/Ride/Noise?
Suspension?
Repair/Cost of Maintenance?

I think the most important issue to address is:
Do you think you will use four wheel drive BlueBird?
Free wisdom for all:
"Spend your beer money on yourself, sex with strangers is often weird and uncomfortable, marriage ruins everything, and oh yeah, Gatorade is delicious."

It's also important to realize that:
4WD means you're heavier.  Harder to stop, and 4WD in itself doens't help you STOP on ice etc.  The larger tires do help.

You'll end up spending somewhat more money on maintenance.  More tires.  More gas.  More parts to lug around.

You're up higher, which can make turns squirrely, but not bad.  It helps you see in traffic.  People can't see by you, so they honk if they're j$#holes.

You'll probably never want 2WD and not have it if you have a 4WD truck.  You might want 4WD if you have a 2WD, and then you've got no way to get it.

FYI, I drive 2WD.

If ya don't want to spend the moolah on the 4x and you won't use it alot get a Pre-runner.  Then you can have all the size, comfort and ground clearance of a 4x with the cost of a 2x.  If I didn't want a 4x4 I would have on I think they are cool.
