Dual t-case Nylint style
« on: Feb 19, 2006, 04:40:00 PM »
Ive heard of people adding a second reduction plate in the axles on the 1/18th nylints. and after i put on some 2.2's i decided to try it.
some people have added a second "black section" which requires a lot of clearancing. and you can also buy i kit from towerhobbies and tamaiya makes, but who has a week to wait for that. so here is what i created when i tore apart my buddys scorpion for parts.
1) the first step is to dissasemble your axles and pull apart the gear boxes
2)now if you take the final reduction layer "yellow" from your extra axle you can fit it in before the black layer(with a little modification)
3)if you take the large top gear off of the first "white" reduction box you can use it as the top gear for the "yellow" layer if you drill 6 more holes in it (use the flat plate from the yellow layer as a guide)
4)now if you assemble the whole thing together the normal bolts are too short. so i went to the hardware store and got some long 4 - 32 screws and nuts
5) the hardest part of this is the clearancing, since the whole assembly is now 1/2" longer. on my first try i thought i could do all the fitting with melting the plastic away with a soldering iron (not a good idea) and it turned out ok. but i ended up using a dremel with a ball end cutting bit.
6)there is a lot of trial and error in fitting the assembly in, but it works great when its finished. since you haveto remove one of the pilars that fasten down the case you will need to drill out the smaller one that is next to it and put a long screw through it.
7)after it is all finished the high range will be like your old low range the the low range is a double low. (and then some) its like having dual t-cases and your second one being a 4.7:1. even with the 5" tall tires this thing moves like a turtle. stay tuned for more upgrade pics.

We did this to my buddys crawler and damn, I used to think the stock low range was low, and we hadnt crawled ours in a long time so when we got it done i thought it was low but when we compared it to a stock one  :yikes: It made it look silly :stopit:

Yup, it's a great idea. Last summer TURBO built a Tripple Nylint Crawler and he has plans on using it for a winch but it's a bit slow

A Dual Case would work in the back, but it will not work in the front since the tire would hit the motor can while turning. You'd need to get wider axles and everything else

i dont see how the motor would hit the tire... unless you add like 2 more planetary sets. the motor has just enough room that the tabs touch the case. i used thin planetery instead of using the thick black layer.

here is video clip from when i did the double reduction. it kind of puts it into reality how slow it is, even with 2.2's

i like it because even with hobby grade electronics, when you try to go slow and one of the axles gets resistance, the motor stops and the other one still spins. its tough to get the motor to stop spinning with 5 times the stock torque.

well, when i was building up my nylint i wanted to upgrade to hobbygrade electronics. and my brother knew a guy who was selling a stampede, complete. so i bought it for $40 and drove it around for a while, then tore it apart. then i was reading a thread on how you can put big tires on a nylint wheel by using stampede front wheels. so i looked over at my pile of stampede parts, and figured i would give it a try. what i want to do is narrow the wheels and the tires  but keep the height. it looks too much like a monster truck, but it sure is hard to flip over on its side. and it has a lot better axle clearance since these axles are really fat.
