22R Rebuild Cost?
« on: Feb 17, 2006, 09:23:17 PM »
How much does it run to rebuild a 22R? I see master kits from engnblder.com go for a tad over 300, but what's about average for the machine work involved? My dad (who's had several engines rebuilt) said I'd be looking at about a grand, but I can't see the machine work costing 700 bucks to bore the cylinders and clean up the head. The truck I'm thinking real hard about buying only has about 150 thousand on the clock so it's not something I really need to worry about, but is there anywhere to buy a rebuilt stock long block?

When I did my first 22r rebuils I didn't acount for all of the extras that I'd need. Everything from silicone, plugs, fluids, filters, and all ran over three hundred bucks. Not very cheap but you gotta have it all. . .

I'm in the process right now as well with a 22RE.  I bought a rebuild short block for $650.  I am doing the head work myself (3 angle valve job, valve grinding).  I'm keeping the valve stuff stock.  I plan on buying an Engnbldr cam and some head bolts.  There's $125.  I still need a water pump ($35) and a full tune up kit ($???) as well as all the belts, hoses, and fluids.  I'm looking to be under $900 if possible.

I JUST picked my 22re up from the machine shop on saterday.  Here is a list of parts that I have put into it.  Engeinbilders master kit as seen here http://engnbldr.com/ToyotaHotLicks.htm.  Along with the oversized valves.  A stage two cam from LC engineering(186.79 w/ shipping). My crank had to be ground and polished, whice was $75.  I had a good machine shop (a one guy operation, great dude!) do all of my machine work.  I disasembled the engine which saved me $50, but if I had to do it over again, I would just let him do it. I had my head rebuilt, and the valves installed.  The head was resurfaced, and jetwashed.  I had my block bored 1MM biger, it was hot tanked and jet washed.  He reassembled, and painted the block.  He even had to machine 33 grams out of one of my rods because I had taken one from another 22R and it was different. He reasembled the eintire engine, ang gave me a break in sheet.  All and all, he charged me $803.00.  If I wouldn't have had to put the new valves in, and rebuild the head and had him just compression check it to make sure it was OK, it would have saved me  $255 plus $60 since I wouldn't have got the valves.!  I see that engine builders cam's are only $80, but I heard that they arn't as good as the LC cams, there is another $100 in savings.

All and all after all was said and done i spend 1360.79 on this engine.   I think thats a fair price for what I had done.  still TOO much to spend on a 4BANGER tho!

Wow, that's some good pricing for the machine work.  Looks like you found a good shop.  I don't have a total on what I've spend on my engine but I'm hoping under a $1000.  I'm not expecting a ton of HP but hopefully some good ol Toyota reliability!
