Bald Mountain 01/28/06
« on: Dec 14, 2005, 09:25:45 PM »
Hey guys,
Me and Ron (Rokcrawlintoy) were kind of tossing around the idea to do a snow run in central CA since hes in the LA area and Im in Chico, its about half way!  So we put our brains together and thought about going to Bald Mountain.  Only thing is Ive never been there (I dont know about him) and we want to explore.  Im working with BigMike a little bit and he wants to go when he gets back from Japan. Also I was talking to Dave at the shop and he was interested, and so was Marlin!  Anyway, maybe BigMike will have some say in this, maybe Dave and the other guys at the shop too. It should be fun.  Im just planning on going down for the day or something and coming back but im not sure considering its about 5 hrs from Chico.  Right now im helping to save money for gas because I am on like donkey kong to go!  If anyone else is interested let us know! Maybe help us out on some ideas in what we should do (day run, night run, over nigher) or what not.  Maybe if someone else has a better place to go, but Mike says its pretty good and so did Dave.

WE WILL BE ON CH 4 ON THE CB!

WE ARE LEAVING AT 9 AM SHARP, NO EXCEPTIONS!

Hay little guy, that sounds like a plan. Actually, were all waiting for the real snow to hit. Hopefully, by then it will be pretty deep. Actually, it is a fun ride there, especially in the snow.

In the summer, if you dont do any sight seeing, you can make it to the tower in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
There are some really cool little spots to play around there, so it can take longer.

The snow is a different story. Last year, we did a midnight run in the snow, and it took about 8 hours. We had some problems with some vehicles, so that added, but in some places, it was a challenge with all the snow.

Its about 40 minutes from Marlins shop, so its not that far. Theres also lots of places you can camp there.

I'll bring my runner. I'm down for that snow run. I'd prefer during the day. Was that 40 mins. north or south of the shop? I can drive I-5 down to the shop. :driving:     :gap:

I'm down for the snow wheel too. Figure out a date and let's get it!!!!  Something else I was thinking would be cool is to have a winter snow run that is put on by a  California club.  where we could all attend., and have a day of snow wheelin.  I know the  Kingsburg club puts one on but I was thinking of maybe one a little further to the north. I think there is one in Grass Valley called Winter Fun.

Ok guys,

A Great place where we like to meet is at the Starbucks located at "1845 Herndon Avenue, Clovis, CA 93611"

There is a large parking lot there with plenty of space to park our rigs in a line for a nice photo shoot.

Next to the Starbucks is a Quiznos (Excellent Submarine Sandwiches) and Across the parking lot, there is a Panda Express.

Also there is a Vons Gas Station on the kiddy-corner, and a Chevron located at HWY168 + Herndon Ave.

Google Maps tells us to get off HWY168 at Herndon Ave, which is nice since the Chevron is there, but if you don't need Chevron gas, then just stay on 168 until the next exit, Fowler Ave. Make a right at the night, and you will see a Panda Express ahead on the left, so turn left entering the parking lot. Make you way straight for about 80 meters and you will be in the main large parking lot and will see our rigs.

Following the map, as you come into Fresno, keep driving until you see Highway 180 (Kings Canyon Hwy), and take it East. Stay on 180 for about 5 Miles. You will Pass an Interchange for Hwy99, just keep on 180. After you pass the Interchange for 99, it will go uphill slightly, and then downhill.
At the bottom of the hill there will be another Interchange for HWY168 (Huntington Lake / Sierra Hwy). Take 168 East. You will go right past Marlin Crawler :turtle: as we are located off of 168+McKinley Ave. You can actually see the shop from the freeway
Stay on 168 for a good 8 miles or so. You will pass avenues such as Shaw Ave and Bullard Ave.
The Map says to exit on Herndon Ave, which you can do if you like, which would be a right turn onto Herndon Ave heading East. Take Herndon east for about 2 miles and then you will come up to Fowler Ave.
Or you could just stay on 168 one more exit past Herndon, which would be the Fowler Ave exit. Take that exit and make a right at the light heading South onto Fowler Ave. Stay on Fowler for about as far as you can throw a tennis ball, and then you will see a Panda Express on the left hand side. Turn left into the Panda Express parking lot, head past the Panda and keep going for about 5 seconds, and you should see the Starbucks and Quiznos on the far right side across the parking lot.

The Starbucks is in the shopping area on the North-East corner of the Fowler and Herndon Intersection.

I did my best with the maps using a really old graphics program. I miss my computer :rivers: I miss Adobe photoshop :rivers:

TIME IS NOW SET!

WE ARE LEAVING THE ABOVE PARKING LOT AT 9AM SHARP!

For those with CBs, be on CHANNEL 4

If you are late or can not find us, here are the basic directions:
  • Take HWY168 East out of Fresno.
  • Continue on HWY168 through the small cities of Academy and Prather. About 4 miles beyond Prather, you will come up to the Only Stop Sign of this trip. It is a 3-way intersection with a "Park-N-Ride" parking lot on the right side.
  • Make a Left here towards the Mountains (heading East) and Follow HWY168 all the way up the famous "Four Lanes." You will pass one last gas station on the left before the road gets really windy. Continue up the mountain and through the windy sections until you reach the city of Shaver Lake.
  • After you pass the Welcome to Shave Lake sign, keep an eye out for a Right-turn road called "Dinky Creek Road." Dinky Creek Road is before you pass any gas stations, on the front side of the city, meaning that if you have already passed a couple of gas stations, mini marts, hardware store, and resturants on the left, then you have gone to far.
  • After turning Right onto Dinky Creek Road, stay on this road for about 20 miles until you see a sign for Bald Mountain Left Turn.
  • Turn Left and take this road in about 5-7 miles until you see a sign for the Bald Mountain Trailhead on your left. The road just before the sign will be a long creasting straight that drops slightly down with a slight left then long right corner. Before both corners, there will be a large opening in the road, and a road that leads to the left with a green gate (unless covered by snow). That is Bald Mountain.
  • Usually just follow the tracks in the snow to get there :gap:

Its about 35 - 40 minutes I think, or maybe 25 minutes, not sure from there.

Anyway, The earlier the better.

Also, we are getting a good storm right now, so there will finally be snow up there.

I was actually thinking around 8-9am myself. Its going to take me like 5ish hrs to get down there so hopefully theres some places for me to camp or something near by since I do not have money for a hotel nor can I even get one.

If we head out early I will probably come down Friday night after work.
