and the build begins
« on: Dec 06, 2005, 02:16:50 AM »
hello everyone, I'm a newbee to the site, and I did watch the movie.... I have an 86 1ton 2wd long wheel base p/u, that is undergoing some major renovations. I got an 84 wreck for 400.00 and yanked out the running gear.
So now my 86 1 ton is getting the solid front axle,
see heres the problem I moved out to the country about 4 years ago and just about achieved red neck status when I realized what was missing...... the 40,000 dollar four wheel drive truck so I just had to fix that. So here's what I have

86 lwb reg cab 1ton
84 rear axle with 3700# springs
84 solid front axle ( long gusset )
I'm using the rear 3000# springs on the front ( from the 84 )
22re ( for now )
w56 from a 94 p/u ( cause the 84 had a g52 )
marlin crawler high steer kit
ifs box ( e bay )
greasable spring hanger pins and shackles ( all pro off road )
shock hoops ( single )
transfer case mounted parking brake ( all pro off road )
3" body lift ( lift kit depot )

still have to get my brake upgrade parts vented rotors, ifs calipers, might do dual rear calipers still have to research that idea

The next thing is the drivetrain
ford 351svo block bored and stroked to 454 cid
edelbrock heads 202/160 int/ex
edelbrock pro flo fuel injection
nv4500 (gm) trans
np205 case
advance adapters 27-0052 kit to bolt em up
and last but not least
2 count um 2
marlin 4.88 electric locking differentials
running 33's on 10" wheels

I got bronze bushing stock on e bay and had them machined so my spring hangers and shackles have bronze bushings

The guy that is helping me is a 4wd guru his truck made the cover of petersen 4x4 mag.
I used to work with him at a ford dealer

I have been bending wrenches and busting knuckles for about 20 years now some import but mostly American, then I went into semi's and now I'm learning heavy equipment I have re-certified my Ase masters for both auto and med/hvy truck like 3 times now

I still consider myself fairly new to the Toyota line, but I learn fast, so with that said I have some questions for you Toyota guy's & gal's

Toyota uses an 8" ring gear in the p/u but the land cruisers use a 9.5" ring gear and reverse cut gears for the front axle

I want to put the Toyota electronic locking differentials in my truck can I use landcruiser axles rather than modify my housings

If so than what years / models of landcruisers would work

I'm not worried about the type of spring used as much as the wheel track marlin sells spring perches
also as far as the landcruiser axles go do they use axle tubes or are the axle housings integral,

The reason I ask is if they use tubes then I can cut them out to adjust the wheel track as well as rotate the pinion to reduce driveline angle

Well thats all for now I will get some pic's and post them

yes the land cruisers have a 9.5" ring gear. they are pretty much the sameas the mini axles except for the offset rear. you can modify the tubes to center it if you so desire. i have 2 sets, front and rear in Texas if you are interested.
If if were me i would go with the ford 9". much less work and about the same strenght, plus you can just about find one at any corner store.

ok I need some help here, I can't seem to get the pic's the right size or file extension to post....
got lots of killer pic's

It is so cool, we took the front crossmember from the 84 4wd cut off the body and bumper mounts
ground it all down smooth and put a receiver hitch between the frame rails welded it all up and capped the ends then welded that under the front of the 2wd frame that gave me front spring hangers a hitch and some lift to boot

It didn't end up in the same place because I used the rear springs from the 84 and they were shorter in the front ( from the center pin ) so it is set back about 1.5"

and the springs are longer in the rear so my shackle hangers are behind the front cab mounts welded on the bottom of the frame

The shock hoops are on, the inner fenders will be cut on the same radius about 1" larger

the ifs steering box and high steer kit is in as is the t/case parking brake and body lift

One thing we ran into was the torque rod would not go in without hitting the drag link,
I got the extension from northwest offroad but that would hit the header so the extension got welded to the axle over the 3rd member and the torque rod is on the other side

We still have to do the rear, the front hangers will go down 2" and the shackle hangers will go down 3"
and my pinion angle should be right

My mother is going to get the rear shock mount for me for christmas from www.aor4x4.com
I'm getting the throught the bed model ( real cool )

might still have to put add a leafs in the front

dear ol mom also signed over her old 89 crown vic to me so the 5.0 that I built that is in there is going in my truck

I figure I can set it up with the 5.0 first because all the parts will work when I get the 351w done
not sure if the trans will last that long but I have a spare so who cares

northwest offroad has the 4 core radiator, mounts, headers and bellhousing and I can use everything on both engines, the bellhousing will change when I put the nv4500 in

however I also have a 91 ifs truck that I could stick the 5.0 in

by the way I thought I was going to have a problem with the hydraulic line for the slave cyl.
due to the body lift, turns out the front brake hose from the 86 2wd worked perfect

why the heck would you ever use bronze bushings on spring hangers and shackles?  they won't let the springs twist and flex worth a damn!

True, I just bought some factory toyota bushings for mine.  It was actually pretty cheap and they should flex/ride better than poly bushings.

tried the e-mail thing and the imageshack site and still no luck

In responce to why I used bronze bushings, the springs that I used in the front were from the rear of the 84 4wd Toyota doesn't make a bushing for that spring that will fit the front hanger so I had some made and since I had enough bronze I had all the Rest made as well

I live in Urbanna Va. and we don't have rocks to climb here however we do have mud bogs, I was more concerned with the ride quality that the flex thing also with regular lubrication the bushings shouldn't ever wear out

we also have the feared height laws however because my 86 was a 1 ton with a 5,500 gvwr that gave me the ability to raise it up higher than normal, personally I could care less if it's leagal height or not as I live in the sticks about 30 miles past bfe

besides I still have a 91 ifs truck that I could do the crawler thing with, of course the ifs would be the first thing to go, it's also a swb so I would make it a stubby or bob or what ever you guys call em

I figured when I put the 351w in the 86 I might as well stick the 5.0 in the 91 anyways and the torsion bars won't hold it so it would get a solid axle also

When my friends and coworkers ask me why I'm building this truck like I am I tell then so I have something to tear up on the weekends, they say thats stupid, I say they don't have to pay for it....

hot damn I got some pics posted, sorry they went in without explanation but I will get to that
pis's 1,2 and 3 were my truck after the 2wd suspension was removed
I had already put the 4wd rear and trans/transfer case in
pic 4 shows my bronze bushings the one on the left is what I got off ebay the center one is for the front of the rear 84 spring that I used in the front of my truck the next one went in all the other springs
the rear 86 springs use the same size bushing as the shackles so I had 2 of the center bushings and 10 of the other smaller bushings, and on the right is one of the shackles
the next pic shows the springs out of the 84 the top is the rear 3000# with the bushings installed and the bottom is the front 2400# spring, I put the rears in the front and the front in the trash
next pic is after the 3" body lift
then a mock up pic on the front
then a pic of the new front crossmember / hitch / spring hanger before it was welded and braced

and then the parking brake
oh is that a solid front axle in there
lets see, shock hoops, steering box, then a pic before final welding on the crossmember
couldn't seem to get that torque rod to fit on the left so we put it on the right
the last pic was supposed to be my truck sitting on all four tires but for some reason the front end got choped off
