More W56 questions

Are all W56's pretty much the same from the intermediate plate forward?  Can I swap a W56B tail housing for a W56C?  The reasoning is that I found a W56B in good condition cheap but I need to use my forward shifting dual transfer cases.

Looks like you'd need to change the shift rails along with the tailhousing but thats not a big deal to do.  Just some roll pins and detent balls to deal with.

I thought so as the 2WD and 4WD tail housings are interchangeable so why not a top shift to forward shift.

Marlin says yes it's easy to do. Make sure to use C shift parts with the C housings and B shift parts with the B housing.

I have exchanged many of these trans rear housings.
It is easier if you stand the trans on the bellhousing and remove the two detent plugs. You will need a 12 mm, 14 mm, and 24mm or 15/16 sockets.

Well that W56B wasn't in that good of condition after all.  I took the rear housing off in my kitchen last night and found half of a C clip in the housing.  I couldn't see real well last night but I looked at it when I got home from work.  It looks like the clip went through 5th (?) gear.  All of the bearings feel good, counter gear thrust clearance looks good, synchronizer ring assembly and fork all look and feel good.  I'm not smart enought to rebuild this.  I'll keep babying the W56C till I can get a rebuilt from you.

I only paid $75.00 for the tranny so it's not a big loss...maybe use it for a core

After looking at that gear it has the same dents and spacing in it all the way around.  If that C clip went through that gear the dents would be random...any thoughts?  I think that I am going to try it. 

I have poured money into this rig and can't even get it out on the highway to get to a trail.  3RZ, W56, dual transfer cases, custom driveshafts, three link front and Fox's.   An unfortunate incident took my rebuilt tranny money.  I can't stand it any more, I gotta wheel.

Hi all, quick question....

So after reading the above posts, im assuming this really is as easy as it states?? I have a 91 w56c that is BLOWN, and picked up a W56b for dirt cheap. All I have to do is swap the rear houseings and thats it to keep my original configuration??? (forward shift that is) Can anyone give me a bit more insight on this? My 91 has sat in the driveway for over 6 months because of this, and I now have the b tranny and want to get her back on the road!!! TIA- Dana

So I've ran into this same issue. I've got a forward shift w56 in my truck and bought a top shift w56. Someone told me that they called marlin and he described how to swap tailhousings step by step... Anyway I could get it posted up? I'm researching first cuz tearing apart my tranny sounds dangerous thanks ahead

the biggest thing to remember about trannys is to have a good size bench to work with and go step by step and put everything in order. i have never rebuilt a toy tranny but I have done a lot of chevys and as long as everything stays in order it is not real tuff

The FSM is good for doing the work.

You want a bench vise for the reassembly to clamp the center plate.  (put a pair of nuts/bolts in the 2 bottom pass thru holes so you don't mar the plate)

Well it sounds like the only internals I'm swapping out is the shift rails. The tailhousing should just slide off right?
