Well here we go, after all the atempts to make my carbed 22R run at angles, I finally got sick of it stalling and trying to restart the flooded engine in hairy situations. I came upon the article in the August 05 OFF-ROAD of the propane conversion on a 22R by gotpropane.com. My mind was racing "oh hell yeah!! thats the answer I've been looking for!!" I must've read that article a half dozen times. So I started to research it in depth, searching on Pirate, and finally called Cary at gotpropane. Cary answered all my questions and explained everything about the advantages of propane, so I ordered the kit for my 22R. The kit showed up and I unboxed everything and laid it out

then I got to work removing all the un-needed carb stuff

heres the pile I ended up with not including the gas tank that I removed earlier

The next step was to remove the original base plate off the carb

the throttle lnkage is needed with the new mixer

the base plate is then bolted onto the mixer

and the whole assembly is bolted back onto the manifold.

Now its time to plumb the regulator, the two outside brass fittings are for water in and out and you can see the filter into the solenoid then into the regulator in the middle.

the kit doesnt come with a bracket for the regulator so I whipped one up using a piece of 2"x 1/4" flat bar and bolted the regulator to the inner fender

regulator and mixer in place everything is looking good

then its time to connect the vapor hose from the regulator to the mixer

Time to measure and make up the fuel delivery lines, the kit includes all the fittings you need.

making up the short line that goes from the bulkhead to the tank

fuel line from tank to regulator run along the old fuel lines

Tank mounted in with the brackets provided in the kit, what a better place to pimp a big Marlin sticker? "Powered by Marlin!"

solenoid wired to a keyed on source filters installed and everything else under the hood is buttoned up

the moment of truth, I hop in start pumpin on the 'ol go pedal and realized "hey dumbass, we aint runnin no carb no mo!" I laughed at my self and hit the key, it took it a second for the propane to get from A to B but then it fired! yeah!

This thing runs way smoother than before and it will idle down to around 250-300. I still need to take it out and adjust the timing and mixture screw on the mixer for the most performance. So there you have it, Give Cary a call at http://www.gotpropane.com/p1.html he'll hook you up. Thanks Cary!

that's a pretty slick lookin setup, what did it set you back? I'd like to go LPG, but I don't think I can in CA. You gotta get this thing on some angles and let us know what it'll do. Also, any idea how LPG runs at elevation(like 5000+...think Rubicon, etc.)

I met Cary in Los Cruses in 04, he had it on it's side and it still fired.

I think I have a pic of it some where???

Definitely worth the money. If my EFI ever takes a crap, I'll go LPG!!!

KYOTA, let us now how long it lasts on the trail. Like how many miles-hours and how big is your tank, a 5 gallon?

I have a 10 gallon tank and will carry an extra 10 gallon on long weekends

So whats the big deal with propane on the streets in cali,,I would guess its no big deal if your out of state running propane??

you cant do anything in Commifornia! it makes no sense because propane burns clean. Cary talks about it in detail on his site and in various posts on Pirate.

I've seen a couple of posts about having them freeze up on really cold days during the winter. I'm kinda scared about that since I'm from CO and it gets pretty cold here sometimes. Last winter, we went out wheeling in -15 degree weather

so I'm worried about the propane for that kind of stuff. Anybody have trouble with their propane freezing up?

the regulator is heated with the engines coolant to keep this from happening, you can see in this pic where I tapped into the heater hoses feed and return lines.

If you run a recirculating engine heater in the winter you wont have any issues with propane freezing up. The farm I used to work for was all diesel or propane year round. Just make sure the regulator is heated when you start and you'll be fine.

The only thing holding me back is the fact that you just can't drive up to any ol' gas station and fill up. Let's say I wanted to drive to Moab from Colorado. I would have to plan my route to hit gas stations that offered propane as well. Plus, you just can't pay at the pump at 2am, you've got to fill up during business hours. I was thinking of running two 10 gallon tanks under the 4Runner and then carrying two extra BBQ tanks inside just in case. Anybody else have the propane setup and drive to and from the trails with it? If I had a trailer and a tow vehicle, I'd be propane'd so quick

Scrotaboy- I couldnt find any used tanks so I said flop it and just bought a new one from Suburban Propane, little over $100. Volcom- I see where your coming from but I trailer mine 90% of the time, and I am going to get another 10 gallon tank and will make sure the tanks are topped off for long weekends. For a street driven rig I'd consider a larger 30-40 gal. tank

Just got back from the shakedown run and am happy to report this fulllly gets it! It purred along on all the climbs that with the carb would choke and die. ( For those who know- 7-up and Mini Rubicon) the steepest stuff we have here that I choked on last time out, walked those without the slightest hesitation. Take those carbs and throw them in the shitter!!

Oh and for those who asked, it was a short day trip about 5 hours non stop and used about 3 to 4 gallons. Will definately be packin another 10 on weekend runs.

I finally took the truck out on the road today to dial in the timing and mixture for best performance. I checked the timing in the driveway before I left at it was at 4*-5* BTDC right where its suppose to be, so I advanced it to 10* for starters and headed up the hill, not bad but weak in 3rd. Pulled over and put the light on it and advanced it to 14* and tried again. Huge improvement! pulls the steeper hills in 3rd strong and 4th a bit. This thing runs stronger with propane on 38's than it did with the carb and 35's, I'm stoked! See it in action at the

Good to hear. Cary's sending me his first "poor man's" small block kit (reuse stock throttle plate save $100). I can't wait to get this thing set up and run it on my buggy. From what I'm hearing, a lot of guys run 20-27 degrees of initial timing. That's a ton considering I always ran about 10-12 on my other small blocks.

Yeah Cary said up to around 18* on a 22R or until you find the sweet spot. I may advance it a bit more but its running awesome where its at!
