What spare parts should I carry?
« on: Jun 10, 2005, 10:40:25 AM »
I have installed 5to 1 in the case, 33's with a slight lift, and plan on using this truck on the Rubicon. I generally take the easy route and don't beat the truck. What spare parts do I need to have to feel confident i can get home 95% of the time. I have a spare u-joints, fluids, radiator repair kit, tire stuff.

Any suggestions??

Mike

I usually carry:
1. spare distributer cap with wires
2. a generic radiatior hose
3. fan belts.
4. Because I've broken one before (and no body else I've ever met has), i also carry a spring center bolt and a couple of U-bolts.
5. Spare brake line
6. Spark plugs
7. fuel hose
8. Air filter
9. Fuel filter
10. Miscelaneous nuts, bolts and fasteners
11. Fuses and wiring stuff
12. The tools to install this stuff.

I know some people carry spare locking hubs as well, but I've never broken one before.

You can go crazy trying to carry everything. I usually save my parts from servicing, and any parts I upgrade, and keep one spare with me from what's left over. Also, anything I know has a tendency to break I'll carry a spare one.

Hope that helps

Me and a couple of my friends have beening think about compiling a list of must have spares and split the load up between us.

If we do write up a list I will post it.

Right now  extra oil, brake fluid, brake lines, u-joints and straps for joints, a set of birfs, a box full of metric bolts and nuts.  I needed to get some valve stems so if I drop on in the snow airing down I wont be screwed. I am sure there is plenty more needed but thats a start

I carry all fluids, battery ends a very complete wiring kit so I can fix any wiring situation I come into, I also carry 2 .50 cal ammo cans packed full of bolts 1 is all metric and the other is all standard.  I always have a t-case output shaft with me along with a spare input.  I carry the old 21 splint coupler from my Mco7 for anyone else beings Ive upgraded to 23 spline.  I carry spare belts, hoses a power steering pressure hose and a complete set of fron axles & birfs.  I carry spare hubs as well.  Hell I even carry spare brake pads too for some reason.  :dunno:

I try to be the guy out there that is always prepared for any situation at any time if at all possible.  Ohyea I also carry a good first aid kit which is a must have. ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I would also throw a change of clothes behind the seat, you never know when you will get real stuck and have to swim through the mud or whatever, bring plenty of beer too, nothing is more help than a cold beer when you need a hand getting unstuck. That I do know from experience. Beer makes lasting friends.

A few things a lot of other people don't carry---tools, on board air, spare computer, spare alternator, starter, and a complete coil assembly.

you could buy a second truck and tow it along with you. lol   I carry  2 chains, tow strap, highlift, oil, water, spare tire, all my tools that i think i might possibly need, air tank, jumper pack, tp, and common sense.  if i can't fix it with taht then i figure i'll just walk home and get another vehicle and what i need to go fix it.
remember no matter how bad life gets there's always beer.
