I haven't updated in a while, I guess I should eh?

So here we go. For the past while I have been trying to locate an '86 and newer rear axle for the extra stance and clearance for my new 36"ers. I found on that the guy was giving away for FREE, less the 4.56 3rd. I jumped on it. I drove out an hour to get it, and this is what I found:

Everything was rusted out, thin walled tubes that's for sure. I took it anayway for the axles and control arms. I'll also modify the control arms for a traction bar later on... More on that later.

I ended up finding an '86 rear axle so I put it to work. I shaved it clean so I can remount my perches where they need to go. While I had it apart, I welded up the 3rd for traction, cut the paper cover off, drilled out the 8mm holes to 3/8", driled out the 3rd mounting flange from 8mm to 13/32", tacked in some 3/8" x 1.5" GR8 FT bolts to the housing. I then checked the 3rd for fitment, burned all the bolts in, welded the paper cover back on, checked for leaks, washed out the metal bits, installed new MC rear axle seals via 2-something inch socket, installed welded 3rd to the housing, and installed the rear axles back into the tubes. Woila, ready to be abused. Almost. Still needs perches, trussing, traction bar, and shock mounts. :flamer:

Oh ya, as I was cutting of the stock perches with my torches I accidentally made the one side a little lighter... :_oops:

Side note: I also bought a Miller auto darkening welding hood. It's kind of flaming, but works real well. No more worries about flashing myself, except for when I forget to turn it on... :shocking:

True that! He was gonna sell it to me for $30 but I kinda figured something was up when he said, "Come get it before I take it to the scrap yard."

Instead of making perches, just use your pivot block as the perch.

Kinda like this:

Holy fancy pants with the 3D AutoCAD!!! I got something like that already, coming soon to a thread near you! I got one side done, it's beef and allows mucho pivotioso. Just need to drill and tap in some grease fittings...

Thanks. It's slow going. Kind of like the sport itself. It may be slow, but it's fun!

Hey Mini what year is your AUTOCAD? I have 2000 and Mechanical Desktop. those pivot blocks are pimp! :beerchug:

2004, but the 3D rendering on 2000 is the same. Just use Rulesurf with Surftab1 & Surftab2 set to about 30 and then for projection use 3DORBIT with view set to Perspective.

Prolly not mang, I would love too, just too far to drive without a tow rig. I barely have enough money to upgrade my junk let alone buying and driving a diesel guzzler.

I was allowed to do some work on Friday. I cut my motor mounts off and dropped them down 3/4" and back 3/8" by locating them on the bottom of the frame.

My 1st gen steering shaft was shot too, the u-joints were gone. So I grabbed a 3rd gen steering shaft and modified it to fit. Works good now. With a rag joint too, much better.

My pretty red drums.

Sorry some of the last pics are crap, I took them in the dark with a flash = not so clear.

Next up is to drop in the engine and tranny/t-cases and mock up the t-case mounts to fit. Once I have that done I'll move onto the rear axle and *gasp* pivot perches. After that, disassemble the front axle and drop in my goodies.

Ya I hear ya. I'm finding it is the fabrication that takes the longest time. Same with watching paint dry, makes me cry sometimes from pure boredom. Wrenching is so fast in comparison.

Good luck with the axle dismantling!

I received my Evo Heim Joint via UPS delivery. What a monster. :yikes: This will be used in the swivel/shackel end on my track bar. Rebuildable, 28* of deflection, adjustable... such a great product. :D

Well it's about time I post again. I've barely had time to work on my truck as life has been crazy. It's gone from no time to even less time working 5 weeks straight of 12 hours a day 5-6 days a week.

AT LEAST I GOT MY PIVOT PERCHES FINISHED!!! :shocking: I just haven't had a chance to try it out...

Hey, what's with the Canadian Dollar kicking USA's butt?
