1985 4runner Rear window issues
« on: Aug 17, 2022, 11:35:33 PM »
Alright, so I have done a bunch of research including reading the cheap tricks write up. I am in no way a professional electrician or mechanic. My rear window will not roll up or down when I use the console switch or the rear key switch. I've replaced the relay with 2 different relays. The tailgate switch works. The topper "B" bolt switch I am unsure of so I removed it and put a jumper. My rear wiper is up and mounted correctly. When I jump these 2 wires (pic for reference) at my  console switch I can roll the window up and down and I can use the rear key switch to roll it up and down. Any ideas on why that may be?

Hey P...

Sounds like there's an "open" somewhere.

Bypass the switch to eliminate that as bad.

That block connector in the photo needs to be cleaned with some zero residue contact cleaner.

Ohming out the wires may uncover an open. :dunno:

I'd rather get mauled by a mama grizzly bear than have to trace down an electrical wire!!  :smack:

Good luck.

remove the jumper at the b-bolt switch. when the bolt is in it opens the circuit, when the bolt is out, it closes the circuit. the jumper you put in(at the bolt switch, not the jumper in the picture you provided)is telling the truck that the top is off, rendering the window inoperable.

I should have been specific. This is not my picture. It is exactly what I did though. I have cleaned the switch and contacts on the switch.

Hmmm. As I said I am in no way an electrician but the from what I gathered from the manual it says when the switch is pushed there is continuity between the #2 & #3 slots on the harness. When the switch is "free" the #1 & #2 get continuity or essentially close. I jumpered #2 & #3 as that's what I gathered from the diagram. Definitely willing to learn.

remove the jumper at the b-bolt switch. when the bolt is in it opens the circuit, when the bolt is out, it closes the circuit. the jumper you put in(at the bolt switch, not the jumper in the picture you provided)is telling the truck that the top is off, rendering the window inoperable.

It is 2 wires. Technically the #1 slot is empty. Which makes sense for when the button isn't pushed it doesn't complete the circuit. I appreciate the reply. 💯🤙🏽

Update: so when I jump those 2 wires it's apparent the relays work. You can hear them and the front switch will only work if you have the ignition turned to on. When I have the vehicle started, still in park with parking brake on, I turn on the headlights, and press the console switch for the window. Nothing happens. Turn of my headlights and it rolls up and down. I honestly wonder if it's just the switch.
