86 4Runner frame swap/build
« on: Aug 06, 2021, 09:15:36 PM »
86 4Runner body swap to a truck frame.

After attempting to lower the 4Runner after I purchased it I started to realize it was probably better or just find a new frame to swap over to. That would allow me to remove the Chevy 4.3 and 700r4 transmission and go back to a 22re and 5 spd manual. I happed across an 86 truck frame that had already had all of the IFS removed and everything already to go for a solid axle. The best part was the guy who did the swap was a welder by trade so welds were great,  he even had brand new bilstien hydraulic bump stops (brackets were welded on already). The guy also had several Toyota’s that he would be willing to sell me a transmission and engine out of. After settling on a price for the frame a 5spd out of an 88 runner and a rebuilt 22re (less than 3k on it when he got hit) out of an 88 2wd I was ready to go to work.

Took me about 4 hours to get the transmission out of the runner and the engine out of the truck and to have the frame loaded. I was on my way home to get to work.

First off was getting the frame into my garage and getting the engine/transmission mounted so I could figure out my rear suspension and also start working on removing the truck bed mounts then moving the back 6 body mounts (had to cut 2 off the truck frame and move them forward then had to cut the back 4 off the 4Runner frame and weld them to the truck frame. Also got the mounts for the crossmember welded on. Still need to move the IFS steering box forward and weld on the rear spring hangers. So far things are gong well.

Got a bit more work done, I have all of the body mounts off the 4Runner frame and all but the back 2 are welded on the truck frame. I have the rear spring hangers tacked on (front of the rear spring) and I’m in the process of figuring out where I want to weld the rear spring hanger on.
Picked up a knuckle ball gusset kit up so that will need to be done in the near future along with moving the steering box forward (got the Marlin kit in the mail late last week).
