22RE COMPUTER COMPATIBILITY
« on: Sep 12, 2019, 08:08:09 AM »
I RECENTLY PURCHASED AN 85 4RUNNER WITH THE ENGINE FROM AN 87 DOLPHIN?  THE COMPUTER IN THE 4RUNNER HAS A PART NUMBER 89661-35040.  WILL THIS COMPUTER WORK WITH MY SETUP?  IT WILL BE THE 22RE WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION.  I HAVE FOUND A LOT OF CONFLICTING INFORMATION BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THAT PART NUMBER SHOULD WORK BECAUSE THOSE YEARS THE AUTO COMPUTER IS SEPARATE.  I WAS TOLD THE HARNESS IS OUT OF AN 87 ALSO. I WAS HOPING TO GET THIS THING DROPPED IN THIS WEEKEND. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

An '87 Dolphin? 2WD? I have the ECU from an '86 I bought for parts and the plugs are 10-18-14, 3 plugs, and the ECU from my brothers '90 2WD project has 2 plugs. Chances are the Dolphin's harness only has 2 plugs being a 2WD.

Sure it'll fit........ Just needs a little brute finesse.

People need to be recording vin numbers from donor vehicles. I neglected to keep the vin from the truck I got my 22re swap out of and its caused me some headaches forsure.

To the best of my knowledge, if the ecu plugs in, you should be safe to try it. If the intake, wiring, etc. Is all from the same vehicle. Record the part numbers from distributor, throttle body, TPS, wire harness, and ecu. If your local Toyota parts Department is good, they should be able to help you out

A quick search for used/refurbished ECU's indicates that they used the same ECU as well, so you should be fine as long as the '85 ECU plugs into the harness that is on the engine.

update: I got everything installed and the harness/computer all hooked up with zero issues.  I have not tried to start it yet as I need a cluster and I am in the middle of a suspension upgrade.  Thank you all for your help!
