dual row timing chain stock in 22R?????
« on: Feb 08, 2019, 03:59:04 PM »
no issue this time, just a Toyota trivia question......wikipedia says there were some dual row 22r engines.  Is this true?  I know the LC kit exists; I am asking about stock.

.............scroll through time and go down to the bottom of the page and you'll see what I'm talking about.....or just say "yes, idiot, they did make some".

Hope everyone has a good weekend

The earlier 22R engines were dual row.  (Just like the preceding 20R engine they were based on).

They had a 98 link chain.     Toyota then went to a single row 98 link chain.   Not sure if they started using the POS plastic chain guides yet.

Around 84 they redesigned the 22R block and head.      The redesign used a 96 link single row chain with POS plastic chain guides.

LC Engineering designed a conversion that uses a 96 link dual row chain with metal guides (nylon like friction surface).

Short of getting dual row conversion, you can get the metal guides instead of the POS plastic.

The early model 22R's came with a dual row, but half way through the year of 83 they switched over to a single row chain of the same length. I own a 1983 short bed 4x4 and it has a dual row timing chain, On my friends 1983 2wd I replaced the timing chain, sprockets, tensioner, and head gasket as well as rebuilding the head, and it had a single row cam chain. Toyota phased out the dual row timing chain in much the same way as the rod bearings in the year of 82. LC Engineering explains it very well

I have an '81 22r that had the dual row chain and even the old 20r style steel rockers.

Hey H...  You "had the dual row chain..." ?

Does it have a dual row or single row now?
