85 Runner out of retirement...
« on: Nov 04, 2018, 06:39:09 AM »
I started this project when I was in college.. Life happened and resources went elsewhere and it has been living behind my garage for 17 years. I actually was building 2 minis back then and maybe Ill work on my extended cab someday too but one project at a time. So this runner was bone stock when I got it and had just been repainted. Before life happened I put a 2" body lift on along with 3in Downey springs, 5.29 gears with a lockright in the rear, 33's, and dual cases from marlin. Of course 20yrs ago 35s were big and you were crazy to run much bigger than that. I remember when marlin first came out with his first marfield and it was a welded ring around the birfield. I'm finding that after such a long hiatus there are many businesses that are not around anymore but there are others that have takin there place. Anyway here are some pics of the build.

I put an IFS rear axle in the rear and a 5in longer spring as well.

Here is the first few things I did. I went with a 5in Alcan spring and had the front axle pushed forward 3in and also had the front spring lengthened that 3in and of course Marlins crossover steering.

In rear ya gotta have the cool guy stuff so I went with the Bilstien 7100 14" and we all l know that they don't fit underneath, so being a welder by trade... lets make 'em fit!!

When I parked it so many years ago it was in need of an engine pretty bad. I had one built but never got around to putting it in. One of the biggest headaches was trying to remember where all the bolts went. It was like a jigsaw puzzle that I took apart 17 years ago and was suppose to remember where all the pieces went. LOL. Thankfully now a days there are businesses that will sell you just the engine bolts you need!!! I also noticed that the holes for the exhaust studs were all striped out so instead of fighting with either welding and tapping or helicoils I just bought a new one.

I went with some 37 Cooper SST Pros. I also noticed that most bigger tires have gone to a 17in wheel.. which kinda sucks when you gotta buy the wheels and tires at the same time..

In the past years, I used to get a lot of calls from Jeep owners wanting to go slow like the Toy trucks.

the first set, 3rd set, and 4th set of pictures work. From what i see nice build.  I like the shock tower in the rear.  axle looks clean, and I like how forward it is.  looking forward to seeing more of this rig.
