My 3rz Swap in my 87 P/U.
« on: Sep 26, 2018, 09:54:41 PM »
Hello Crawlers,

I wanted to start my own build page and introduce myself. My name is Evan and I been reading through these forums for a good while now. Thank you to all the great posts out there that have encouraged me to start my build.

I purchased an 87 Toyota pickup single cab some years back, this was my first 4x4 vehicle and I loved it. It was mostly stock with some ranchos shocks on it, completely stripped out had no interior, heating or cooling, nothing.... got it for cheap tho! I was taking it out to the desert in SoCal as much a possible and didn't worry about it. I realized the guy was trying to turn it into a prerunner, but I had completely other plans for it. I liked crawling and going over difficult obstacles.

When I first got it:

The IFS worked great offroad, but I wanted more.... sooooo I decide to find myself a solid axle, I got one from an 85 P/U. I stripped it down and cleaned it up, rebuild and regeared 4.88 (In retrospect I wish I did a locker in the front at this time)

I chopped all the IFS out :_order:

Installed my axle and got the spring and shocks all figured out:

Removed the rear axle and had a plan to install an elocker. While trying to modify the housing I completely butchered the housing  :smack: So i bit the bullet and bought a housing for the elocker.

Here the link to my SAS build up to see how i did it. Thank to all who helped out when I was trying to get it all figured and dialed in.

Beating the truck up before i rip the 22r out:

It's finally 3RZ time!!
Got the motor on the stand

Timing chain and balancer delete.

Now for the questions!
What size is this bolt? I have not found one to fit it yet.

What does this plug go to? And does anyone know if you can get a new plug somewhere since the wire is chopped at the plug? Or is this a junkyard only type of thing?

Anyone have a part number to this piece? The stealership wants to sell me the entire throttle body.

The next plug is also a complete mystery to me. I wish i had a 3rz to look at to compare  :hammerhead: Also chopped at the plug.. part number anyone?

Am i missing a piece here? Looks like something bolted up at one point.

Another chopped wire  :slap:

I want to see this thing in the truck which means i need to rip out the old 22r. Any advice on things that would make it go smoother?

Id like to add AC to my 3rZ however my truck has no AC stuff at all. I was thinking about getting one of those eBay hotrod kits that have everything. I was going to see if i could get one without the compressor and use this one. However, i do have a cracked in the hose. Does anyone have a cheap one the can sell me? The stealership wants to much for it.

Lots of questions so I'll just hit on a few that are obvious. The ac, you'll need a top plate for that compressor for a 2nd gen truck like an 87(that's what mine came from) to have the correct fittings to connect OEM ac lines. Just hit a junk yard and snag the whole under dash ac and heater box.

The black wire at the water neck goes to that temp sensor. The bolts you see missing on the intake are normal. Nothing to worry about.

Yes lots of questions! Sorry, been trying to get it all figured out. Still trying to find random small items at the junkyard has seemed to take most of my time. Wondering if there is a source to buy new electrical plugs for this motor? A bunch of the plugs have been chopped off =/

Awesome! Looks like I can order most of my plugs except the darn coolant temperature sensor. Guess keep junkyarding.

Anyone know what the plug under the intake manifold is for? I have a couple  pictures of it in the first post.

Got this piece figured out, was staring at pictures of JDM engines and realized the plug had broken off the sensor in the area circled in red
Its 89422-35010 Water Temperature Sensor for anyone who has the same issue.

Still trying to figure out what the heck this is.... Anyone??

Just a little update. Got the 22r out of the truck, need to clean it up and figure out what can be eliminated in the engine bay.

Well got a good but of work done this weekend. Welded in my hydro assist. Dropped my tranny out and cleaned it OCD style. Installed the flywheel and new clutch on the 3rz.

However I discovered a crack on the fill plug on the transfer case. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Can I just have someone well it or should I start looking for a new case? Kinda wondering if it will ever seal right again even if I weld it.

Side note: I found some fuel lines from a 4runner it has an inline fuel filter and since the rz has it on the motor I can just take that off and should be fine right? Also how did you guys mount your lines? Just self tapper or something?

Thanks

I re bent stock Tacoma lines. I used factory holders down the frame and even across the firewall. The fuel filter is up to you. I opted to keep the one on the block just for simplicity. I like your idea though. The 99 4runner I have is easy to change the filter.

Redneck, yes maybe that would be best and just put a rubber hose between where the fuel filter is on the 4runner lines. I got to mock it up make sure my exhaust won't melt it lol.

Ttrev thanks the fiberglass came with the truck when I bought it. Definitely makes it easy to go whatever tire size I want later.

Here are some pictures.
First one of the crack. What do you guys think? Weld it?

Also when I pulled off the crappy cast iron manifold that was cracked to hell I noticed 2 of the ports looked like they had some oil in it. Do you think I need to worry about this right now? Not a ton but maybe seals are going?

Okay so got some more stuff done yesterday. Installed a 2000 taco mini header. Anyone know what the part# is for the cover for this thing? Or where to order one for less then $200 that the stealership wants? Been looking all over the internet's to get one.

Another thing I'm trying to determine is what downpipe to use. I heard some people are using the t100 downpipe instead of the Tacoma? I think this is what BigMike did on his, will this work on my 2nd gen pickup? My motor is a 97 from a taco.

Maybe it would be best to get the flange and chop and weld it up? I read alot about the O2 sensors locations and if they are not the right distance it will throw a check engine light.

Been trying to find someone with a stock 3rz taco to compare if anyone is in socal near San Diego.

79 4wd, 83 2wd sas, 85 4wd, 87 2wd, 91 2wd sas, 94 4wd sas, and another 94 4wd ifs. All have Tacoma downpipe and factory mini header except 94 sas he opted for a pace setter header for a 96 Tacoma and we had to modify it because it hit the frame.

Awesome then built a custom crossover pipe? Do you know what the distance between o2's need to be or am I being overly cautious? Thanks,
