Been trying to resolve my no cold air issue, diagnosed the idle up issue and fixed it.

Attached my gauge set reads as follows when engine with A/C off,


When engine has ran at 2k rpm's with A/C on for 5 minutes as per FSM expansion valve test.


Manual states that is evidence of a clogged expansion valve.  Before removing the cooling unit, is this correct, no other possible easy fixes  :crossed:?  Is it possible to replace the valve in truck, or simpler to remove the cooling unit?

Is that gauge reading with the engine running and AC on?

Are both gauge hookups on the compressor?

Then, from that reading, I'd say it's low on refrigerant.

I would expect the hi side to be higher if you had a clog. Looks more like a :pokinit: pump.
And actually with pressure that low seems weird it comes on at all.

Assuming R134a.

The pressure of the R134a on both high and low side should be as above reference.

I don't think it was 40 degrees out, which your first picture indicates.................

Tried to add refrigerant, it wouldn't draw any in, will have to check the gauges.

It's a '91 still R12, outside ambient temp was likely 96, truck had been sitting in the sun for about 4hrs.

Clutch engages, no noise, or strain on the engine.

At 96 R12 would be about 110.


At 0 psi on low,  R12 should go right in.

No strain also points to low refrigerant...………..nothing to compress.

 :smack:  It has been so long since I used the manifold, I didn't realize that the blue gauge also acted like a valve.  Added a can, this is what I have now after 5 minutes at 2k w/AC on.
Sorry for the fuzzy pic, looks to be about 25psi and 125psi.


It looks like it could use another can, the can dropped the vent temp 115 to 68 in that 5 minutes, so everything is moving, now to see if I have a leak before I add anymore.

Also, low side port would leak unless you wiggled the schrader valve pin, and did the same thing with the R134 adapter fitting I had to use to use my manifold.  Is that the schrader valve, or not enough psi to push it closed?

You can try to tighten the Schrader valve (they're the same size as the ones on tires).

Get a good cap, that should also seal it.

The R134 fittings have good thick caps I was going to leave the fittings on. I will double check the valve that is in it.

If the compressor bearings go, that contaminates the system correct?  The compressor on my Avalon all but seized smokes the belt and squeals like a stuck pig.  I have all new comp, condenser, and dryer, a local shop wants about $300 if I have everything removed for them to flush the lines, I am guessing there isn't a DIY way to flush it is there?

I flushed the lines (just the lines) with water hose, then denatured alcohol, then paint thinner, then air.

If the evaporator doesn't catch junk, the dryer will catch it.
