Toyota Jumped The Shark
« on: Apr 07, 2018, 02:00:28 PM »
I don't know about anyone else but Toyotas just don't seem to be made very well anymore. I think the change might have began when they opened up US manufacturing. They may be reliable but the paint/clear starts oxidizing/chipping the day you buy it. All of the rubber starts deteriorating quickly especially around the windows and doors. everything is held together with cheap one time use plastic push pins. I've got rubber molding pieces on my 1985 holding up better than my 2010 corolla. I have to smack the dash on my corolla just to get the stock radio to work. I feel like the quality really started deteriorating around 2005 or maybe I can just say the FJ cruiser was the beginning of the end. Remember when Toyotas were small on the outside but seemed big on the inside? Now it seems like the opposite. Remember when you could actually see out the windshield and doors? Now the seating seems too low and the doors too high with blind spots galore. What happened to the small simple reliable pickup that put Toyota on the map? What happened to the small pickup period?  :blah: :blah: :blah:

A lot of this has the average US consumer to blame. Toyota has seen what caliber of quality the US consumer will accept and purchase. When they first came to the US they brought the same caliber of vehicle they offered to JDM. A very large portion of Americans want cheap (in price also means in materials) cars that they can get 200k+ miles out of. Toyota are not fools. They know they can go cheap in certain areas to offer this type of vehicle at the price these Americans can afford.

Ditto for my 07.  Po at least had the roof and hood painted on mine, but forgot to have them paint above the doors and it has begun to fade.  And the paint scratches if you sneeze on it or look at it funny.  The engine runs very well, if only limited by a very lazy auto tranny.

My auto is holding up well. Its very smooth. If you mash her to the mat it will even impress some people.

They are still some of the highest quality vehicles there are. Just seem be meeting expectations like Andrew said.

When was the last time you physically waxed the roof? Ummm
Never?. Paint isn't the same on anything. Epa b.s. makes it better for the enviroment, not your car.

Considering I got the truck 2 years ago and it had zero paint on the roof at that time. You are correct I have not waxed my rusted roof. Nor have I waxed the roof on my 1983 but it isnt rusted. Another area new Toyota falls short of the quality.

Why? Studs and egr block off they are good engines. My work truck had over 300k on it when I turned it in. I absolutely loved that truck after I deleted it. They wouldn't let me stud it.

He definitely needs to do egr block off if it is legal where he lives. They are great engines after that.

You are correct. As long as you aren't hot rodding it you'll be just fine.

90% of the time, a paint job is is done better than factory on newer vehicles (after a collision repair) most new vehicles have 1 light coat of clear. I see this all of the time with vehicles coming thru my body shop (im the manager of one).

I waxed my 2010 corolla often and it still faded badly, in fact, on the roof, it seemed to corrode/rust from the inside out somehow and looked like it had been scratched with a wire brush as the clear started to fade. I thought maybe I had bought a car that had been repaired and resold until I saw a few other corollas with the same exact issue. I also wax my 2000 landcruiser often and it hasn't started fading yet and is 10 years younger. I see more tacomas with a rusty roof than any other vehicle and that's here in SoCal. I can only imagine what they look like elsewhere. I would never buy a new Toyota and would suggest getting a tetanus shot for anyone that's about to buy one.

Socal= acid rain?
Who knows. My 08 Tundra lives outside and is damn near new looking on the roof. But I'm in MT. Also a 96 runner and 04 Tacoma with no issues in the same household

The sun is extremely damaging to anything left out in it. Just because you guys have a dry climate in CA and don't have as many rust issues down there. Doesn't mean you don't have your own issues. The hood and roof of a car that isn't garaged and is left out in the CA sun for years on end is going to be slowly destroyed by the sun.
