4.7 tranfercase popping out of gear
« on: Mar 03, 2018, 01:36:25 PM »
Just picked up a new set of duals with a tripple stick setup and the transfer case with 4.7s pops out of gear on me. I have the HD spring for the case but I am not sure which detent bolt and spring I need to remove because Im not sure exactly how the tripple sticks shift the shift rails. I have 3 allen bolts on the passenger side and 2 on the drivers side. Which one do I need to change to keep the transfer case from popping out of gear. I have pictures working on posting those.

Does it pop out when you work the other shifter?

No it pops out when I let off the gas. On the throttle or shifting is no problem but when I take my foot completely off the throttle it pops out

The triple stick just changes the linkage going to the shifters to modify their location, so it doesn't affect where the detent would be.  If your 4.7 is popping out you need to change the spring on the High/ Low in the rear case.  The high low fork is on the left.  So you need to pull the spring on the driver side rear.  Although it is not a bad idea to change all of them.  Also make sure your boot is not getting stretched tight.  If you boot is too tight, that pressure on the stick, combined with the shift of the drivetrain could be pulling it out of gear.  Or if there is not enough clearance around the shifters in the hole of the floor board, then the shift in the drivetrain could be causing your shifter to hit the floor board and pop it out of gear.

My question about the body lift has to do with the shifter contacting the body.
Seen this issue many times.

No body lift. I'll post pictures after I get the rebuilt trans and cases back in. That was a good comment on the boot tugging at the shift lever. I'll take it for a drive without the boot and see if I can see anything that would cause it to pop out of gear. Thanks

Glad to say HD spring solved the problem. Its stronger than I expected. Took it for a test drive and I no longer need to hold the 4.7 stick in gear. Trans got rebuilt too I'm able to shift into all transmission gears smoothly. Once I get the brakes sorted I'll be in good shape. Thanks for the help!
