Coleman lanterns
« on: Feb 13, 2018, 05:17:41 AM »
Do any of you guys have an old Coleman lantern? What year, size, how did you get it? Good stories while using it?

A few years ago while spending a night on the creek with my son and my friend and his daughter my friend pulls this old 228h out of his boat. I've seen them but never used or witnessed them being used at this point. He starts pumping the tank up and rolls the cleaner a few times. Then opened the valve about a half turn, lights a piece of pine straw and pokes it up in there. The little sacs puff up and then light on fire. He cranks the valve open and we are off to the races. I was fascinated by how simple this thing was, yet made so much light.

Ofcourse I consulted with Mr. Google that night and found a heed of information about them. Found a store on eBay selling dual fuel bed and new with a case for $48. Bought that and waited a week. That next Wednesday I was like a kid on Christmas showing off mg new toy. Took it on the creek and Jason and I had a good time with both of them running while we had our fill of beverages and music around a fire. This wednesday night tradition has carried on for the last few years and the dual fuel and his old late 70s 228 are still doing their jobs.

In december I'm perusing adds on the let go app and found "Coleman lantern $10". Message the lady and she said it was in her shed when she moved in her home. Knew nothing about it. Sent my wife to get it and when I got home gave it a look over. 11/74 228h she sits a little crooked as it appears to have been dropped hard. It had no mantles and the globe was missing.  I sat it on the refrigerator and has sat there since.

Sunday it's raining and miserable for outdoor activities. Jason calls and asks if I'd like to go to the Flea market. Load the youngins and nephew up and we head out. Kids looking at farm animals and dogs, wife looking at bows and other stuff for my daughter me and Jason basically just want to get some new led head lights and boiled peanuts. Nephew stops at a junk stand full of hot wheels and I glance to the left and see a lantern sitting in a pile of other junk. Pick it up and Jason's jaw dropped. I asked the guy running the stand about it. He said $15 it's yours. I couldn't get my billfold out fast enough. Got the old rusty dusty thing to the parking lot and gave it a look over. Sears and roebuck model number really long, date 8/64. Got him home and took the globe off for a good cleaning, pulled the plunger, good cleaning and light oil it worked. The "3piece cap" on the tank was allowing pressure to leak by. Took it apart, boiled it to get old crusty o ring out. Replaced that and lightly sanded the surface where it seals to the threads of the tank. Valve was stuck shut. Freed up that and hung some mantles. Put some fuel in it. Gave her a go. Man she works like a new one!

Got me to fooling with the 228. Same procedure basically. Clean every thing. It has 1 piece cap so that part got skipped but valve was stuck bad. Disassembled and had to polish the needle valve and then shoved the old graphite seals back in. Got her working to. Gonna get a globe for it and use it to.

I scored my 228 about 23 years ago at a divorce sale.  $8 for the almost new lantern.  $2 for coleman 2 burner propane stove.  Both still work perfectly and get camped with annually.

Jason has a stove we use often. I have one at my dad's place my grandpaw gave me but for some reason pops used it and hasn't given it back. You got a good deal there.

Id like to see that. I've made one from a roll of toilet paper, paint can, and alcohol.

My friend Chris says he has one in his shed I can have. He doesn't even know where it came from. Has no desire to use it. Gonna have a sweet little collection started on the cheap.  :eyebrow:

I figured there would be a larger turn out than this with as many campers, fisherman, hunters, and wheelers there are on here.

Darn shame. Next thing you know people will quit wheeling old Toyotas because electric cars can make more torque at lower rpm...

I have Coleman lantern and stove. They have there place. When I'm in my 4runner I use homemade cowboy wok, that uses propane 1lb bottle. 1 bottle lasts over a week for me and the wife.and I have a collapsible solar led lantern.

I keep an eye out for them when plundering junk sales or Flea bag markets. I wouldn't mind a cooker like the one above.

I went over to my co-workers place on Saturday to drive his tracked John Deere tractor and I got a picture of the Colman lantern he found in the barn when he bought the place. The globe says made in West Germany on it.

The bottom will have a date code on it. Very cool old piece. If he ever wants to part with it, my friend has wanted that model for a while.

Yeah he saw that date code. I forget what it was. He was pretty excited to find it. I doubt he would part with it.

Found a guy at the flea market with several of these for sale in varying conditions.  Can’t remember exactly what he wanted, but I wanna say it was $15 each for parts lamps and $25 each for working examples.  Had a mix of red and green

When I was at H8TPVMNT's place last week we were looking around in a barn that he will be allowed to use as his own shop on the farm he is working on now. I went upstairs and these old lanterns were staring right at me. I picked 'em up and he said "take them". The one on the left is a German made 'freihand' and the other two are both Coleman not sure if the middle one is good for anything other than a parts donor?
