This doesn't suck anymore.
« on: Dec 16, 2017, 03:19:50 PM »
I had my rear diff re geared by a friend less than a year ago and since that time it has failed twice.
This is the rear "Marlin" magnetic drain plug I put in this past year I removed to check the state of affairs after being AAA flatbed towed home from the gate of the OHV park I went to last time I was going to go wheeling but, I had multiple failures that day with the rear diff and driver side front wheel bearings.

Glad I have been with AAA since 2002.

Anyway, I put an E locker up front a few months ago so I'm putting one in the rear also, the price is right and why not

Yeah, pretty much done letting friends do things to my rig except my buddy Tony who has built a lot of rigs. His guidance has helped get my rig more capable with each mod. He's the one that sold me my Marlin DTC.
Ed @ 4 Wheel Specialties will re-gear my new E locker like he did the front E locker back in the summer time. His labor rates are really fair and he stands by his work, a man of integrity.
I hope his son holds the same level of decency when he takes over the business in a couple of years.

I like to do my own.  After a bit of a learning curve and a few hundred bucks in tools it gets easier and more clear over the years and really pays off after a few rigs and re-gears.  I like to consult that guy ZUK too.  http://gearinstalls.com/  That guy is a real wizard.  He can get you sorted out on the perfect "slight deep" pattern for performance.

That being said I am glad you found a guy who will stand behind a R&P setup.  That is a rare thing.

I'm in a lot of pain and not able to take a pain reliever so I'm not all there but, I also took the rear end out of the truck today, it is ready to get E locked.

You might consider keeping the ruined one to play around with set-up patterns if you are interested in learning. However you would have to invest in a set of gears for it.  :twocents:

Our friend Zippo wrote one of the more comprehensive write-ups on how to set up Toyota gears. He posted it over on the 4wheelunderground forum. It is very helpful. Also since you know someone that knows how to build gears, ask if you can help out and learn. I don’t speak from much personal experience. I’m trying to learn it myself.

I dropped my axle and 3rd member off to 4 Wheel Specialties in Van Nuys on Wednesday and was going to learn how to set up a ring & pinion today but, one the bearings from the install kit was bad out of the box so we have to wait until Monday and they are going to teach me how to set it up and that is cool.

Post some pics of the yellow paint on the ring when you get it back.   Kind of curious if they read the pinion depth correctly and the paint will tell the story.

Bearing bad out of the box?...hehe...a good one. :)

I can't argue, I wasn't there and didn't see.
Tomorrow I pick up the axle housing and E locker with the new gears as soon as I can get there, it's all ready now.

What I was able to find out was the flange got ruined using a punch instead of a custom wrench and that's why I didn't get the parts back until today.
Someone asked about this.

They painted the inside, that kind of blew my mind, it looks too good to be hidden now.

You know what's messed up is finding there was nothing wrong with the differential and I didn't have to keep my rig down this long, a wheel bearing on the passenger side went bad and I jumped to conclusions again.
So I bought the E locker and didn't need it but, now I have no choice because the job is close to being done. I need some sealer and the new to me 4Runner axles to be done and I'm not sure when they will get here.

Toyota rear bearings usually tell you they are bad by leaking out of the seal. At least all of mine have gone that way. That and a weird noise when you turn a corner.

At least I have everything I need now and will be getting new bearings installed on my new to me axles, don't want any problems like this to happen again any time soon.
I had a buddy bring an acetylene torch here today so I could clearance the housing to fit the E locker.

I'm going to order some diff armor that will hide the beating I gave the housing but, paint is gonna be good enough for now.

I scored a pair of axles out of a 1995 4Runner that needed bearings on one side so I had both done but, they called me and said the flanges were bad, that pissed me off. I paid a fair price for what were supposed to be good axles out of a low mileage runner but, I'm thinking the miles were very hard miles and I now have more into my used rear axles that a ring and pinion costs
S.O.B.
The new E locker is mated to the housing that was partially modified by me, the shop didn't clearance for the ring gear or cap bolt so now it all fits together nicely and I'll be wheeling this weekend, finally.

While the brake lines were left hanging open, the system drained and my front brakes need to be bled also but, they don't have Speed Bleeders so I need help and check it out.

Almost done aside from brake bleeding, pretty sweet.

you should pull that LSPV arm off the axle and tie it to the frame.  for bleeding and having brakes on the back work.

Of course the drums are in place when I bleed the brakes, this ain't my first rodeo.
There is no LSPV on my rig, that went away last year.
If I have to make the mailman help me bleed the brakes today, that's what's gonna happen.

These are an awesome little one way valve that makes brake bleeding a one man job without needing a compressor or a vacuum pump.
