We don't have possums here.  Apparently they are too smart to put up with the winters.

Want some? I see atleast one or two opossum a day here. About 20 rabbits. My yard is apparently breeding ground until I let the dogs out.

That would really change things around here for the raccoons huh?

Made some more tiny, progress on the duck-foot plow tooth cross member.  I ended up with several stock cross members.  I sliced the mount portion of them off and mocked it all up on the t-cases.  A bit of trailor leaf spring will fill in the gaps on the outer frame.  I will add another piece of duck foot to protect the back of the t-case where the drain plug is. The ears from the duck feet are re-attached for the frame mounts with the chamfored 1/2" duck foot bolts welded in place. I have some 1/4" scrap in odd triangles I am piecing together for the skin of it.  These are getting put together like a puzzle and sliced and bent to follow the somewhat rounded profile, then will be welded into one piece.  Should be pretty rigid with all those angles.

I have another cool re-use idea for reinforcing the front drive line drop out. This thing is going to turn out so rat-rod  :yesnod:.  I don't even think I'll paint it.

Got a few little sessions over the weekend on the duck-foot cross member.  Finished up the puzzle piece skin of 1/4" scrap.  Made the access holes for the mount bolts and the crawl box drain, added a bit of duck foot for a leg off the back to protect the back part of the t-case that hangs down.  I boxed that in a bit so it won't bend.  I was going to use horse shoes to brace up the front drive line cut out, but they just didn't fit right.  My solution was found in the scrap bin; a bit of old chain.  I mocked up the drive line with the t-case on the x-member and tacked the chain links into position, then took it apart and welded it all up good.  Looks really rat-rod so I am pleased.

I may add a bit of additional gusset and maybe a bit of bar stock to bulk it up, but it's basically done...

The 1st gen trans tunnel seems a little shallow.  When you cram a W56 and duals up there on a high clearance cross member things start crawling into the cab pretty fast.  I began by cutting some shifter holes and then kept lifting and cutting until my cross member was about where I wanted it.  This resulted in the need for a new bit of trans tunnel. What started out in an exercise in tight waddedness ended up kind of cool.  I was looking for some metal to scavenge when I found a couple dented up military surplus tool boxes. I had originally intended to use the square bottom portions and then I realized how cool it would look to just use the tops...

Got a bit of time Saturday.  After removing a huge garbage bag full of country living from the floorboards and finding 4 of my lost saw tools, a head lamp, several chain saw files and a bunch of shotgun shells, I was able to finish up shaping the tool boxes to fit pretty nicely on the carved up trans tunnel.  I had a dream of being able to open the hinged lids of the tool boxes to access the drivetrain, but when I set it up there was no structural integrity and the floor pan wanted to sag in the middle.  After tacking the tool boxes together in place I spot welded the lids shut and sealed all the seams and hinges with silicone.  I got it mostly welded in and cut the shifter holes.  Everything is stout again.  Looks like I will manage and easy 2" of drivetrain lift and a much flatter belly with this hack job and the duck foot cross member.  This truck will run smaller tires most of the time so every trick helps.

The W56 shifter almost smacks the dash in 5th ad the 1st gen boot is too small for it. I think I'll cut off the most of the stick and weld on the old 1st gen style shifter that has a bend on the top to keep your knuckles from smacking the dash.

Is it flipped 180? It for sure isn't right when comparing it to the images on MC. It actually looks like it's been moved 90 degrees CCW from your picture.

So I flipped it around and it made it worse.  You can't even get 1st gear.  It's either bent from being moved around with a tractor by the previous owner or just the '86 shifter doesn't fit right in the 1st gen proportions.  No biggie because I have to loose the fat shift stick to use the boot I want anyway.  I'm going to lop off the stick and weld the early one on it with a little sleeve.

Installed Marlin shifter bushing and socket.  Now it has a nice tight feel you don't usually expect in a 1st gen.  Everybody should get these.

Finished up duck-foot t-case cross member and made frame mounting points out of some 2"x2" square tube.  Seems nice and stout and shaved a good 4" off my belly with a nice slick dished spot to slide over things now.  I was able to hack about 2 1/2" out of my old 4runner driveshaft and welded it back together.  Truck moved of it's own power for the first time since last November.

The W56 seems fine in general but makes a clunk, clunk, clunk in reverse so I may be tearing it apart soon.  Not sure what to expect there but It's time I learned to rebuild transmissions anyway.

I wanted to get the engine up to temp to re-adjust valves hot and retourque the head.  I went and horsed on it a bit around the property in 1st and 2nd gear.  Initial impressions of the 22re performance 282 cam are "Oh hell yes!"

Now I have to finish exhaust, mount seats and get the bed on to start driving for reals.

I'm curious if you get ANY movement out of any of head bolts when you retorque them??  I have never detected ANY movement on ANY head bolt I've rechecked after initial install and running the engine a few miles on a 22??  And if you do... something is wrong... just my very limited experienced opinion.

Almost none, like 1/16th turn, if even at spec torque.  I would guess what is wrong is the super cheap HG I used :)  This is also the reason I decided to go ahead and re-torque hot.  Better safe than sorry.  With a Toyota HG I wouldn't bother.

Jim says 282 cam likes .007-.008 intake and .010-.011 exhaust so I will be adjusting valves hot next chance I get since I have the exhaust side at .012 now.

Here is my perspetive solutution for my clunking reverse idler gear.  I yanked this trans out of the 1 ton 2WD with W56 trans code on the vin tag. I seem to get a free 2WD every so often.  I have let the transmissions go in the past thinking they were worthless to me.  Probably best to keep ahold of the trasmissions for W56 rebuilds since they share so many parts. These 2WD W55 supposedly have different ratios in the lower gears but the same part for the reverse idler gear based on what I found.  We will be confirming this over the weekend hopefully.  Last thing I want to do right now is drop my trans, but I sure don't want to run a damaged reverse as hard as we use this pickup.

Had to make a new pipe to clear my t-case cross member.  Used old junk on the existing flanges and added a flex pipe leftover from a Celica so it can take a hit.  Now it snakes through without rubbing on anything.  Back flange still hangs below the frame.  I can't seem to get it up in there with the set of exhaust bits I have on hand right now.  I may address that later if it snags on things. I did add a bung for the AFR gauge O2 sensor.

I sure did.

Dug into the W56 to swap out the reverse gear from the parts W55.  Thankfully the W55 shares quite a few parts.  I will be saving the rest of it in a box for when I get around to a real re-build of the W56.

Since transmissions are kind of a mystery to many of us still and the busted reverse idler gear seeems to be common, I decided to post up the gear swap.  I would have loved to have done a full rebuild right now but I need some more tools before going there.

So the first thing is to get he back half of the case off.  All you need to do is pull the shifter top cover off and remove the bolt that holds the shifter socket on that shaft.  Note the orientation of the shifter socket.  Don't ask me why.  :smack: Then take out the case bolts and whack with a dead blow hammer or other dumb object.

It doesn't just fall right out, but it's not tough either.
