Harmonic balancer issue?
« on: Jul 07, 2017, 05:36:30 PM »
I'm putting the harmonic balancer onto my engine and I noticed grooves where it seals on the front main seal. Are those suppose to be there? I attached a photo.

That's wear from the front seal.

Just set the depth of the new seal so it's on new section of the pulley.

If that's not possible, there's a sleeve you can buy to put on the pulley so it's all a fresh surface.

That photo looks like a badly worn shaft.

I don't think there is much "play" in the seal position.

I've never installed a repair sleeve for a harmonic balancer.  A new harmonic balancer is a little pricey, so I'd probably look at installing the best repair "speedy" sleeve available...  maybe this one?....

OR.... perhaps this is an option?

There is when the new seal is thinner than the original.........

And only use the Toyota seal

The aftermarket seals are crap.

Based on the photo, it looks like it has already been "played" with.   :gap:

So I used a sleeve, and when i went to put it back on it just slid right in and didn't seem to make contact with the oil seal. Do you think the oil seal is bad? I replaced the seal with a brand new one before this so I might have got a defective one or one that was slightly too large. What do you think?

I'm not a fan of the sleeve, when it gets that bad, time for a new one, iirc, 22re performance has them

it actually looks like it already has a speedy sleeve but if the new one isnt making contact with the seal you probably got the wrong seal.  damn parts people these days :shake:

Rockauto has them  http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,1990,4runner,2.4l+l4,1272316,engine,harmonic+balancer,5512

Measure the ID of the seal and the OD of the balancer.

That thing already has a speedy sleeve on it.

Here is the Toyota PN for the thinner main seal you want to use:  90311-45014

I got mine off amazon https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Main+seal+90311-45014

You go ahead and bottom it out and it puts the seal surface in a different spot.  You might even be able to get that sleeve off and polish up the surface.  If you decide you are really screwed on your harmonic balancer I could dig in the shed and see it I have a usable one I could trade you for a pound of coffee beans :).
