84 dodge crew cab build
« on: Feb 22, 2017, 05:28:51 AM »
Some of you may know that as much as I am devoted to toyota, I am just as devoted to cummins. My 98 is a decent rig and has well served it's purpose for me. Cab room is a little tight now since having 2 kids. No plans to part with it, just build him a friend. A more family friendly tow rig that is just as reliable and just as simple.

Here starts the story of this purple pile of dodge. As I am heading to visit some family in Coffeeville  (~2hrs north of me) I keep my eyes peeled for old toyotas, 3+3 chevrolets, or 74-79 ford crew cabs. Been doing this for years. Had some time to kill on this particular trip this weekend so I was cruising along about 45 mph in the 06 taco when I hit the brakes and say "Holy $h*+ I swear I just saw a 4 door dodge!". My wife who is all too familiar with me and my stupid projects just rolled her eyes and said "What's so special about that?" In the most sarcastic way possible I reply with "Well, smart ass just how many of them have you seen?". Turn around and go to this guy's house. Knock on the door. No reply. We are in the middle of farm land and hunting property. Just plain good folks around there. I go start looking at the thing. Write a note to leave on his door and he pulls up. I'm not greeted with a "who are you and why are you here?", but a kind "Hey man, what can I help you with?". So we strike a conversation and ends up he wouldn't mind parting with it since he has an old 7.3. He didn't seem to know how hard these trucks are to find and said he'd take $1400 for it and I could drive it home. I told him where home was and that I would return Wednesday evening with a trailer. Today is Wednesday so I plan to head up there when I  get off.

Here she sits in his yard till I get it.

As it is right now it has a 360/auto in it. They never made these with a cummins since they ceased production in 85 and cummins didn't enter till later in the 80s. It is essentially a bolt in swap. I built a 3+3 that I then pulled the engine and sold because someone made an offer i couldnt refuse. Sold the 3+3 to my cousin and we started puting his cummins in it (160k ve pump) we did a gsk and denny t afc delete. I have him the valair clutch, flywheel, and nv4500 with the truck so we put all that behind it. She's been sitting in his shop for the last 6 months wit the the front clip off so I offered him 1500 for it and he said ok. I'll be getting the pedal hanger and stuff off his 92 dodge parts truck the engine came from. Hopefully this will be something I can stick to and finish but with work keeping late every day and not having a shop it will be a trying build.

Got out there and cleaned 600 lbs of mud out from under it and in the bed. Actually found no rust at all on the underside of the cab.

Also, bought a 89 reg cab 5 speed ve pump 12v truck from my neighbor. It will be the donor for this as long as it runs ike it should. That way I don't have to tear the 3+3 apart

So here is the 89 I scored from the neighbor. Been sitting atleast 5 years that I know of. Possibly longer. Primed the ole lift pump up and she fired right up with a hot battery. Washed it, drove it. Daggum transmission is roaring on deceleration. So I guess I'll spend $150 to rebuild the gutless getrag.

Let a friend borrow the tractor for a few days to work on his new yard for his towing business. No playing with dodges this week?

Just a post to say I'm watching the build thread. Traffic is low on this forum already and with this being non-Toyota....

Anyway keep with the updates and cool project!

I'm watching this build as well, it's going to be a good one from the looks of it thus far.

You guys are correct. I don't expect much traffic since it isn't the cookie cutter sas of a toyota. It is a project that will be hauling toyotas and I figure someone other than myself might get some amusement from it. Maybe learn something new.

With a little measuring yesterday I found I got lucky on the 89 being a cab and chassis. It has the same wheel base. That saves a little since I won't have to build a rear drive shaft. Also found out that the 89-91 12v use an ac compressor that is rather expensive and hard to find. Using a 92-02 water outlet / ac compressor bracket from a 12 or 24v can result in the use of a much more common ac compressor that's $120. Luckily I have a few brackets laying around.

Haven't messed with the crew cab much. I decided that a flat bed that can pull a trailer would be a bad thing to waste. Ive been piddling with it a little in the evenings when I can.

So far ive replaced all fusible links with a fuse block. Replaced head light switch, all gauge cluster light bulbs, dome light. Plan to get the brakes bled and rebuild the get rag then see how it goes.

No worries, the crew cab is still getting built. Going to tear the chevy apart and put the ve pump 12v and nv4500 in the crew cab.

Nice score, it actually looks surprisingly good from the pictures. How hard will it be for you to find a replacement rear flare? Near me there is what I am fairly sure is one of these, except it is airbagged. I will try and get a photo.

What is the tow vehicle here? It looks quite cool, especially with that hitch in the tub.

Those rear dually fenders are about $450. I plan on replacing the bed with a fleet side bed and making the truck 4wd with Ringle rear wheel. No need for buying 6 tires. The tow rig thwre is a 98 dodge 3500 single rear wheel with a similar drive train to what will be going in the 4 door.

Murder, I forgot I did do a little. I got 2 new to me factory dually fenders for the crew cab. A friend works for a company called steel warehouse and he scored two 4x9 1/4" thick pieces of stainless for me to start Re working the bed on the fatbed. Maybe i can get a ghetto shed put together so this winter I can build these things. I enjoy summer too much to spend my time off working on stuff at home. Winter I hunt but have plenty of time.

Got a friend over in Mississippi that is a 1st gen and crew cab lover. He has built a few and still has plenty. He has a 4wd chassis with 3.54 geared d60 front and d70 rear I'm debating getting. I acquired some dually fenders some time ago so I'm not sure what I'm going to do as far as the bed goes. As for now I'm almost certain I will stay 2wd dually. Going to make a trip to his place soon to get a 92-93 core support and possibly some other nic nacs.
