Shock advice
« on: Feb 14, 2017, 07:44:33 PM »
Have an 86 pickup with 31's, no lift.  Any advice on what shock to run on the truck? I've seen KYB Monomax and Bilstein 4600's as decent options but some people have told me to go with Bilstein 5100's due to tire size but those are for lifted trucks, right?  Any advice on what to do would be a huge help since I just cracked my rear shock today on the trail

For a stock-ish setup my favorites were the skinny white KYB "Gas Adjust".  Never wore one out and they rode better than the bilsteins I had on the same truck before that.

Emu Nitro-Chargers are really good but they cost a bit much.

Now I also like the big yellow monroes or re-badged version that Napa sells, the "Gas Grande". Boring but good shocks and free replacements forever.

I am sure you will get lots of other opinions :).

After running Bilsteins, Monroe, Rancho...   The KYB's are my favorite also.

Isn't that messed up?  They are so cheesy looking but they are such good shocks.

You can always spray paint them with Candy Apple Red, and then you change the "cheesy" to BLING!  :beerchug:

I like the adjustability of my Rancho 9000's.....

Plus you can compensate for old age with them.

I ran a bunch Ranchos.  I only adjusted them one time.  The only compensation for old age was replacing them when they started leaking!!  Like my old body... as the Ranchos aged, they got stiffer!

I've run my rs9000s trouble free for 17 years and love em.

Mine lost the ability to adjust after a couple years.  I liked them while they worked though.

Why not go with a race shock you can tune.

Been running Emu Nitro-Chargers for a couple of years and they are real stiff. Barely notice when you hit a big bump at speed, but you really feel the small ones when moving slower on the road.  Haven't put any trail time on them but I'm sure they would do great.

I have always like the idea of that but the price point is usually a factor for me.

I run the 9000's for adjustability.  the KYB skinnys are good too, but not the reds, too stiff unless you run a lot of weight.   :twocents:

For a cheap shock they are fine, but the race shocks are way better for their serviceability and the fact that you can tune them.
You can rebuild them and change them when ever you want and fix "A" broken part. Can't do that with the cheap stuff.

Those are good shocks man. But they are 2.5" diameter. Don't think you need that much on these things.

What shock(s) would you recommend for a stock 1986 Toyota Xtracab for typical 4-wheeling?
