stock to rock(crawler)...2nd gen overhaul
« on: Jan 29, 2017, 08:21:03 PM »
From DD to around towner to cobweb collector, the rig is finally getting a much overdo makeover. This will be my first 4x4 project after many motos and other toys have passed through the garage. I'll be lucky to get 5-6 hours wrenching per week with all the other shop going-ons here but plan to be cruising the trails by the time the snow thaws.

stats: 88 pickup, rebuilt 22re, 31x10.50s, death wobble

plans: SAS, 5" lift , locked 5.29 hp/v6 diffs, dual ultimate cases, tube bed/exo, 37's (or bigger :D)

A man drives a toyota and bashes a honda...  :headscratch: they are the toyota of the atv world !!! Lol might not be the fastest but last forever. Seriously, I like the way this build is heading. That looks like a nice straight body on that truck.

Agreed, owned more red bikes than all other colors combined and loved most of them but my last crf450 put a sour taste in my mouth when the unicam engine took a crap prematurely (to be fair it got ridden hard in the Pismo dunes quite often). My XR's were always bullet proof though, two smokes were awesome, and crf50 pit bikes are a blast.
Wish the yota body was as flush as when I got it but it took a beating when I was young, reckless and newly licensed  :hammerhead: Once I get the tub off and do the flat bed it should look sweet again as thats the most banged up part. Been amassing parts for a few months now so I'm stoked to have everything ready to get it rolling, just need to pick up the dual case (almost built ) and wheels/tires.

It's nice to see another 1988 dark blue standard cab 4x4 on the forum!  :beerchug:
Just a suggestion, 3" leaf springs are typically plenty enough for 37in tires.
Best of luck with the build!

Thanks for the suggestion, I was slightly worried about being too tall with the 5" lift but theres no body lift on it like other top heavy rigs I've seen and I'll probably go as big on the tires as I can fit (and hope the axles hold up :-\ ) I really like the look of your truck with the 4Ds.

Not much of an update but got a little more work done on the axle last weekend. It's definately slow going with all this fresh snow taking up my free time.

This was filmed at China Peak mountain resort in the central Sierra Nevada mountains. It's been an amazing season up here so far, we've had more than a few days like this video   Zips front and rear, was going to swing for arb but got a deal I couldn't pass up on the yukons.

Finally an update, glad to be rid of the well abused IFS and on to straighter things. Got some haggard buckets from a donor rig to play nice with the incoming 3rd stick until I get something a little classier :king: Need to drop the tranny to put in the new clutch and get the shiny new double bolted on  :turtlehead:
Also, swapping the loud ass cherry bomb muffler with a buddies stock one because the deer don't seem to like it  :smack: Meanwhile this amazing van moved into my neighborhood

Now that the exo is finally done I've got the rig back at my place for the rest of the mechanical/electrical work, and picked up some new (used) wheels & tires courtesy of a local yota guy.

Lots of progress since the last update and the rig is almost ready to get out on the trail for its inaugural hunting season. Here's some of the more significant work:

After months of grinding/sanding/brushing/cleaning/prepping and painting the frame/axles/exo, beefed up the crossmember and installed tube doors.

Dropped the tranny, cleaned off 30 years of grime measuring inches deep then blacked it out. Installed new clutch/flywheel/short throw, mated the dual ultimate, nicked a hole for the 3rd stick and put it all back in with the help of some 2x6 wood jack extensions.

Ground down the old shifter ball to fit in the stock case and carpet went back in for dampening before mounting new vinyl over it, while the drivelines take an expensive vacation.

Almost done with the bed. Picked up a regulator and mount for the full 20# CO2 tank my old roommate left behind, fitted a driver side mirror and wired the rocker switches. Got a new FOX shock too, except its for a bicycle.

Fans and winch came in, need to trim the grill substantially for the latter and fab a mounting plate for the formers. Wont happen until after I MARLINize the mounts, stuff in the GM alternator, plumb radiator/power steering and install intake.
Need to twist the rear axle since I put the CV out back, anyone on the cali central coast have a welding truck and like beer?  trailers not done yet and my neighbors poor 110v can't get it done  :flamer:

The surf van appeared again, this time with some new rubber, plus a random pic of my boss at our work's annual hot dog eating contest.

Thanks. Finally rolled out of the garage over the weekend for a test lap around the block, before a trip to the shop on the freshly built trailer to rotate the rear diff. Didn't have to trim too much off the grill to fit the winch, but did have to grind a few nice holes in the lower radiator brace.  New intake, alternator, radiator, belts.

Got the new birfs and picked up an old FJ d-shaft to make a square tube spare. Need to smog, align and take off PNO. Plus extend bumpstops and install t-case parking brake. Saw this super clean MR2 the other day (with another across the street).
