Stock Suspension and Bilstein 4600
« on: Jan 22, 2017, 12:10:58 PM »
After dealing with numerous other issues, including a w56 rebuild, I finally got around to installing my Christmas gift of bilstein 4600. My truck is a standard cab 93 with no lift. They all went on easily but the right rear seems to be really compressed. Sitting on level ground, there is maybe only 3-1/2" of available up travel before the shock bottoms out. The left side seems fine with about 5" of available up travel. I realize the angles are different but I wanted to ask. Perhaps the factory leafs are sagging.

So, for a stock ride, is it all good or do I need to add a leaf/replace the spring pack? It seems to sit pretty level and the spring pack is fairly flat.

I might just be paranoid and don't want to ruin a $75 shock. Specs on the shock say 7.3" of travel and that puts it roughly in the middle where it sits. Its at about a 45 degree angle which would give clear to 5" of true vertical travel.

Since most of the rigs on here are nowhere near stock height, I may be asking the wrong fellas!

Most Toyota's end up with a right rear lean with age, due to the gas tank being on that side.
If you want peace of mind, disconnect one end of both shocks and take the measurement between the bump stops, it will likely be off 1.5" as well.

Thanks for the tip. I just don't want to ruin a new shock. I did measure fender clearance and the right was 3/4" less. I think it's ok but wanted to check. Might try an add a leaf at some point.
