87 4runner daily and trail rig
« on: Oct 17, 2016, 07:37:07 PM »
So I have been on here for a while and none of my trucks I have done a build thread. I left the scene for a little while while I started a family and sold my 87 4runner and my 83 sr5. I am now on a different 87 4runner that I had been searching for the right one once the wife said let's take the kids to azusa canyon(I lived here all from high school till college) so I will start with some pictures from the night I picked her up

i was out at the Pomona swap meet and came across a guy who had just totaled his K5 and had a brand new set of 252 street locks that he had not even put on yet. they are a 15x8 with a 4" backspacing. i talked him down to $150 for all 4 of them i could not pass on this deal. next was to order some rubber for the truck. i did some research and fell in love with the BFG km2. 4 wheel parts had a sale on them so for under 800 for 4 with free shipping, they pay the tax and they sent me a $50 gift card i was sold. here they are mounted up on the truck.

a few weeks later the family was invited to head out to Glamis for thanksgiving and i wanted to drive the 4runner out without a top on. the wife objected as it would be a cold trip across the desert for the kids in the back. she actually said what about the soft top you want. i explained to her it was close to $1000 and she said happy birthday go order it. you can only imagine how fast i hoped online and ordered it as this was way better then the bikini tops i had had on my old 4runner. install was simple and it only took about 45 minutes and one buddy and a few beers to get the job done. this by far is the best purchase i feel i have made to date.
down in San Diego for the weekend we headed to fiesta island to cruise on the sand.

rolled up windows are awsome.

rear view with the topper on

now we had to lay some tint on the front to match the topper

close up with the tint

Now i have a few buddies not on this board who are all solid front and dual cases most on 37 and up some on 40's. They kept on telling me to go sas but i never could find the right deal on a front axle. here in southern California they are overpriced like a mother. finally my buddy art tagged me in a 4 link set up front end. i was not planing on go 4 link and the guy just so happen to have a set he was going to pull to go tons on his wife's runner. it was a 1983 axle with a trail gear truss, the trail gear diff armor, trail gear front inspection cap, 4.88 gears, Detroit locker, chromoly hubs, six shooter knuckles, trunion bearing eliminator kit, ifs hub conversion with vented rotors and 2" wheel spacers.  then he messages me and says he has a rear end with a v6 high pinion 3rd with 4.88 but open. this one had a blue torch fab diff armor and a set of poly performance rear chromoly shafts that were not installed yet also with 2" spacers that he would toss in for a little bit extra. i instantly jumped on this deal and he even delivered them to me.

it is the softtopper.com brand. i went with the dark window option which helps keep it cool and low profile in it. i dont really like the option of people looking at my kids or recovery gear in the back end.

i had been driving this rig for a while with no real issues and planned to take the kids and the wife up to Azusa canyon to go play in the mud and on the rocks when i walked outside to see a pool of liquid running down my driveway. it was 1 of two things either my wheel cylinder or the rear axle seal. so i proceeded to pull it apart and inspect it and found that it was the wheel cylinder and it had been leaking slowly the rear shoes were contaminated and cracked so i went ahead and bought all new shoes drums and wheel cylinders to rebuild the back brakes.

i am actually in the process of locating a hp for the front as well but man people believe they are gold. it is almost worth it to buy a complete 3rd from cores west but they only offer the Yukon zip locker, a spool or an open diff. i really want to stay with Detroit or go ARB later on.

I know years back marlin attempted hp in rear, had problems. maybe because its open, is the reason its working, do you know how much abuse it has been through

very nice, kind of looks like mine. those tires are 35s, right?

Looks good brother. no these were 33x10.5x15 before on stock suspension she rubbed at full lock but with a BFH she made some good turns.

so the time finally came and it was time to start the sas. my brother had just gotten hired at my work so i had a personal driver for a while and my wife had just quit her job to stay at home with the kids. so i called up my buddy jimmy who is amazing with yotas. and he comes and we load it all onto a trailer and get to work.i had just ordered the all pro extreme lift kit with 4 inch long travel springs for the front and 5" for the rear since that is what all pro recomends 1" higher in the rear for 4runners. i still belive this is going to be off a little since i will only run a soft top but my recovery gear will make up for it i guess. first was to cut off the suspension.
Ready to go under the knife.

nice and smooth now she is ready for some frame reinforcment plates from ruff stuff

once we were in there jimmy noticed that the frame mounts on the truck were cracked at the frame on the driver side so he fabbed up some sweet mounts and boxed it all in.

now to mock up the frame plates

at this point we had a few deliveries and we went out to the 4wheel parts car crush to pick up the front and rear trail gear bumpers and the long spline shaft to lengthen the fron staft i went with the creeper joint that was only a few bucks more than the matsuba joint.
4 new BFG km2 35x12.5x15

at the 4wheel parts car crush my wife decided to purchase me the 2 bumpers that i had been wanting since they had them instock.

loaded up ready to go home. who would have thunk a yukon could carry all this stuff. the winch was bought off a buddy brand new model with the synthetic cable for $300 i could not pass that up.

front bumper mocked up.

once again jimmy is back fabing up little things to make the gear box box mount even stronger than it was. we sent the gear box out to get rebuilt as it was spewwing out its guts when we removed it. they also tapped it for hydro steering as that will probably end up happening when i go 37 or larger in the future.

here she is with the gear box all bolted up and ready to go. we are making progress and she is on her own weight.

after looking at the rear end i wasn't pleased with it and since i had just rebuilt my brakes a few months ago we decided to weld on a face armor for the rear and while we are here we did the new bearings and seals. when we pulled the 3rd from the rear end i had purchased it looks like the ping and pinion was all chipped up and the unit was completely loose so now we have to build that one. going to put a locker in it now that i am here so now we will be locked front and rear.
sitting on its own in the rear

sitting on its weight with the 35's

old rear end and the messed up hp diff

new armor

welded on to the housing it actually looks pretty good

got a new coat of paint on it
