:)bestgen4runner's build page.
« on: May 14, 2016, 03:56:24 PM »
So........
My plan is to give this whole build thread thing a try. This guy I know with a red 1985 4runner has pointed me in this direction a few times. LOL
I have reviewed a few of the other guys builds.
No way I will come close to any of the well written builds on here. Just going to make a nice little place to show off my rig, tell some stories, post up my adventures, and show my skills as a Toyota mechanic.
I plan on starting off with the history of me and Toyota since I have grone so close to Toyota. I can honestly say it has been and is a huge part of my life.
Here goes,
So, I started as an apprentice mechanic working in Newport hills at a small Texaco gas station for a great guy named mike Johnson. Mike was a former Toyota mechanic at linda tenie Toyota and was a winner of the master skills chanpionships.
Way back in the day Toyota used to have competions between its best technitions, Mike was one of those guys. He had won first place out
of a very large group of techs from the Portland region. (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana)

Mike was a great teacher and a great guy. I don't believe any apprentice could have had a better mentor. I was 19 at this point in time. (Yes I did know everything)
At the Texaco mike had developed a following of Toyota vehicles due to his great ability to fix them correctly the first time. He was exceptional at diagnostics.
I cut my teeth as a mechanic working on first gen Toyota 4x4 trucks and plenty of corolla, Camry, fj40, landcruiser. You get the idea "lots of Toyotas". At this time in my career I had no idea about the legendary reliability of the Toyota and especially the incredibly toughness of there trucks. (I guess I really didn't know everything)
It was not very long before mike figured out that I could not drive a stick, :shake_head:  LOL
He told me If you cant drive a stick son you cant be a mechanic. Well, Guess what I did. Yep, went down and financed my first truck.
Used of course (I'm making $8.00 an hour, hourly). 1986 Toyota 4x4 pickup, 22re manual, short box with the most grandpa canopy you have ever seen. Yep, she was a lady magnet alright. Those stock size tires and wheels just screamed pimp. I think they were 28"
Can't remember how much I payed for it. I sure remember trying to get it home "bunny hop" killed it at every light. had to wave people around me a every hill so I didn't roll into them. I was white knuckled and sweating the entire drive.

So I have been driving the truck around for about two weeks if memory serves me right. When I get invited to my first wheeling trip. Sweet!!!
Now this must be a 19 year old thing but apperantly all the wheeling done at this age must be done in the dark, also winches are for people who don't know how to wheel there trucks, and recovery straps must not have been invented yet. Needless to say our group came prepaired for anything.  :hammerhead:
Well let me tell you those Goodyear h/t tires my new truck came with sure worked great on that gravel road up at tinkum. Then as we began to get into deeper and deeper snow I started to really have some trouble staying on the road. :(       Oh so H/T stands for highway terrains, Got it.
Sure enough down the side of a very steep hill she slid. stopped up against a tree on the passenger side. Eric My friend was the first on sceen to access the damages. "Don't come over hear dude you don't want to see this!" set my mind at ease that there was only a couple minor scratches that would most likely buff out.
So now what do we do. Easy lets just keep trying to drive it off the tree and up the "no way in hell" hill I just slid down. Bye the time we had all had a wack at it. the passenger fender was flat, right front corner light was broken off, plastic bumper extention was gone, passenger door was flat, and the passenger rocker was (yep you guessed it) flat smashed to "pick a bad word". I still had a few weeks before my first payment was due.  :clap2: continued

Two exceptional Moab guides teaching a rookie.

I don't think we could have enjoyed having you on the trip anymore than we did.  Great trip!  That picture of the Pickle exit really looks like it was just rained on.  Lots of extra silt on everything.

You'll note I had my hat turned up Gilligan style.  The Pickle made me get serious (I know it doesn't look like it) and the brim was in my field of vision.  I also took down the KOA parking pass from the mirror.  It's the little things...

 :welcome:
Continued story from above.
Now that we had finally decided it was not coming out on its own. What can we do. Introducing the offroad wrecker (tow truck).
The poor tow company dispatcher lady. So how bad is it stuck? Oh man, its really really stuck we have been trying all night to get it out. where is it located? Its up on the pass way down this narly trail in really deep snow, slid down the side of this huge hill. So we have two trucks that are used for off road recovery one is really large and is $500 an hour and the other is a 4x4 standard wrecker that is $200 an hour. What truck do you want us to send out? Holy smokes, I was thinking like $100 total. We will take the small truck please. Its just off the gravel road, down a small hill, super easy to get to.
So the tow truck arrives and the coolest tow truck driver in the world is driving. First thing he says "HELL YEH BOYS, WHERE IS SHE AT, LETS DO THIS THING!". Now I am thinking, its 3am right now this guy is seriously on a caffean high or he is stoked for this tow.
"follow us" up 10+ miles of trail threw serious snow in the pitch black, branches scratching his truck. I tell my friend as we start out, drive fast dude I got like $200 in my bank account. That tow guy was on our ass the whole time up the trails, threw the snow, and in the pitch black. As we approached the Hill where she lay I started to really worry how the hell I was going to pay for this and If the driver was really going to be pissed off that we had run him and his truck threw such nasty stuff. Its already been at least an hour buy the time we get to the truck. That's it! (with disappointment in his voice) You sure you can't just drive it out of that. I'm Sure, we all have tried. Well alright, Hear we go.
10 minutes later she is no longer stuck and now its time to pay the man. So How much Do I owe you mister.  :help:
"Well...... ,its been about 2 hours at this point". "You work at a Texaco?". I'm still in my uniform from work.
"Yes, sir" I said. So, since it was just off the gravel road, down a small hill, super easy to get to And you work at a Texaco like me. How about we say..... $100. I gladly payed the man. I honestly think He was having fun the entire time. I Have pictures of this tale, I will find and post.

Continued

So, now that I have a smashed up truck and years worth of payments. I Guess its time to start mods and repairs.
Well some lessons are always learned in the process of building a truck into something special.
First mod-   I am going to replace that smashed fender with a brand new one strait from Toyota.
Lessons
#1 Apparently parts from the dealer are not as cheep as my young mind had predicted. $$$$
#2 The $35 dollar fender I ordered out of the aftermarket body parts catalog (yes this was before the internet, No there were not any dinosaurs around) well....... fit was not one of the considerations when they make things in china. OMG it was bad.
#3 Having it painted should be easy and maybe $50. Ha ha ha ha ha  (evil laugh) We then began to Rock the black primer fender on the right front corner.
#4 When the wrecking yard guy ask if you have power windows. Don't say "I don't care as long as its white like the rest of the truck".  ::)
My first fabrication job was to make the non- power window door into a power window door. Took some work but I was successful in the end and my door was White. YES!

The flat rocker panel was just going to have to be flat. Couldn't fix it, couldn't afford to have somebody fix it, and heck it was a badge of wheeling. Got several of those badges on my first trip out. That's a sign of something I am sure.

Next I managed to collect enough money to order a set of tires and wheels from Summit racing. Chrome nascar style wheels and 31x10.5 15 bfg mud terrains. White letters out of course.
I recall saying. My tires are huge now. LOL

Mounted and balance Myself at work. Boy oh Boy did she look like an offroad machine with those new mudders.
And that Chrome. BLING BLING.........
Got up to go to work the next day and WHAT THE!
Drivers front tire is flat. NO WAY!!
Fast spare install. Off to work to find the nail, or screw. Would You look at that, Its leaking from the weld in the center of the wheel. My boss says.
YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! REALLY!! (Young men have short fuses at that age)
Unfortunately Summit racing was not able to just ship me a new wheel with out seeing the issue.
So My options #1 have it fixed myself. $$$
#2 Ship it to them for inspection. If found as a defect they would replace and cover all the shipping. $0000
#3 purchase a new wheel, send in the bad one and if its defective they refund all money.
So I had to drive on the spare due to option #2 (got no money, Just bought a set of new wheels and tires) for about a week and a half.
That sucked with one little baby tire and three nice new beauties. Man oh Man did my buddies let me have it.
continued  :D

Here is my 6 year old buddy. Kimber, he is from Idaho. Pure breed drahthaar . Big points if anyone knows what that is.
He would really appreciate it if I would stop with the working so much and sell the 4runner.
He is about double his correct weight right now. Do to neglect from his dad. Yes you can make a bird dog lazy.
Just keep feeding him till he has trouble getting around so fast. Lol
I showed him my Benelli today Just to Truck with Him. I am cruel
His eyes got so big. LOL
It was like I hit the turbo button as he ran for the door.

The trick is to erase the "s" in the "https" of the link and then put it inbetween brackets like so without the quotation marks: "Not a valid youtube URL"
