Tuesday, April 26, 2016: The 2016 Tacoma meets the 1981 Hilux

First day back my goal was ABSOLUTELY to go wheeling side-by-side with my Hilux. I was planning this the entire time. I really want to see how this Tacoma does 100% stock. Only problem is, while we were still in Texas I received news that our only year-round trail, Bald Mtn, was closed until the end of May. I missed the date by one week. The timing with this entire ordeal has just been horrible. Nonetheless I wanted to at least go somewhere with the Tacoma stock so I invited TURBO to drive my Hilux and we headed up to Millerton Lake :driving:

My two trucks together at last!!

In case anyone is wondering, I'm running FJ80-width front Diamond axle and a 1st gen Tacoma rear axle. Tires are 37x12.50 on 15s.

My first truck wash!

This was pretty crazy for me because since owning and building my Hilux in 2004 I swear to you I have only washed it THREE TIMES TOTAL. The Hilux works hard and gets the job done every time. I  it looking like it goes wheeling rather than some pavement pounder. This doesn't mean I beat it up; It is easy to wheel hard without taking damage thanks to the Triple Marlin Crawler. But as for the Tacoma I've known for a long time that this is a show piece and I'm gonna keep it clean and presentable.

A car wash and it hasn't even been off-road what am I thinking

If you've got this in your rear view then you're in for some good times.

Truth be told the new Tacoma is only barely making better highway mileage than my old Hilux on 37" meats. Going to be interesting to see how much MPG is lost once the Tacoma gets some tires under it.

Great trip report on your cool new ride!  Anticipating awesomeness.  New vehicles always require a learning curve, especially when they have added all these modern "conveniences".  Awaiting the transmografication with excitement!

Despite not doing much of anything it was fun. TURBO and I figured out why I was struggling with low range. I couldn't get it to engage. It would just sit there beeping and beeping at me. Apparently neutral is not enough and low range will ONLY engage when the clutch is engaged. I guess I can understand this from a redundancy standpoint, but seriously when the transmission is in neutral the output shaft is unable to transfer any measurable torque. Sure there are bearings spinning on a free shaft which could cause it to slowly rotate from the oil's viscosity, but honestly... Guess I should have read the manual :ha_ha: It's still sitting in the glove box.

Disabling this nuisance has been added to my list ;)

The 4.30 R&P and 3.98:1 first gear do an okay-job but won't know until I actually climb something with measurable obstacles.

There were two other choices for the day...

One was to continue up to Bass Lake where we have some lower elevation trails, but after talking to my friend from Yosemite Lakes Parkway he said some forest gates are open while others are still closed. Obviously I am not remotely interested in taking my chances if the roads are still closed.

The other is Blue Canyon / Bretz Mill. So I called our High Sierra Ranger Distract OHV Manager who informed me that while there are no gates for obstacles (such as this video of my Hilux climbing Two Step), all trails are closed.

Back in town we topped off both tanks. I'm running a 20 gallon tank in the Hilux, and according to my brochure the Tacoma has a 21.1 gallon tank.

This was important because I then did this :D

Which brings us to our FIRST product Give-A-Way!!!!!!

We will send a Free Marlin Crawler Hat to the first person who guesses the closest weights for both trucks!

So let's see some guesses!

Toyotadon had the closest average guess accuracy of 4.75% to actual so he gets the Hat! ONLY 10 LBS OFF!! :o Hiya Don  When is the next time you'll be by our shop? I'll keep a hat in my office for ya!

Ok that was pretty fun, I'll have to think of some more ways to do something like this with this build :D

I was thinking the Tacoma would be 500 pounds heavier. I knew my Hilux is on the light side. I built it to be light and efficient. It turned out to be 640 lbs heavier. According to some quick searches, a stock 1981 4WD weighed in at 2,975 to 3,065 lbs. So if we assume 3,000 lbs like emsvitil suggested, then I've got 800 lbs of Rock Crawling equipment. The Tacoma could potentially become close to 5,250 lbs! Holy moly! From where I come from this is pretty heavy and any weight makes it that much harder to get up a trail. Gonna be fun wheeling this Taco! Seriously can't wait!!

Hilux

Tacoma

I didn't realize I could have parked on two different cement slabs or else I would have gotten individual axle weights. Bummer.

EDIT: Fixed data!

Cool!  I really thought the Tacoma would be lighter.  It has a GVWR of around 5500 lb. so that only leaves you with 500 lb. of payload if you have 600 lb. of passengers.  Half-ton truck?

I've heard by today's standards it is a quarter ton. Brochure lists a payload capacity of 1,620 lbs, listing this as GVWR minus curb weight. My door sticker lists GVWR as 5,600 lbs. Subtract 4,420 lbs and we get a total payload of 1,180 lbs. Minus me we get 1,005 lbs. So I suppose that technically it is a half-ton but people on different forums are claiming it's not a true half-ton.

Wednesday, April 27, 2016: Rock Sliders

First official day back at work and I got All Pro's brand new 2016 "Extreme Duty" APEX Rock Sliders installed. These are built from 1.75" x 0.125" USA-made DOM tubing with four x 2" square legs per side. Not only DOM but also 4% thicker walled than their standard sliders. On my Hilux I am running our old USA-made DOM sliders that are 0.120" and I have come down on them so HARD at times that once the impact killed the engine. Not sure why but it did. Yet they have only sustained small dents. USA-made DOM tubing is the REAL deal. None of this imported Chinese recycled lawn chair CRAP that other companies sell. (See my USA HREW vs Imported DOM tech article. You get what you pay for!)

Knowing the Tacoma is heavier I wouldn't want anything less than these: https://www.allprooffroad.com/tech-info-mainmenu-63/model/16-tacoma-mainmenu-113/2016-tacoma-sliders

In my opinion Rock Sliders are the #1 most important piece of body armor so on they go!

The Tacoma enters our back shop for it's first time!!

Had the sliders painted and ready to go on. First time ever installing "bolt-on" body armor and I thought the fit was pretty good. We had to elongate one hole on each side but otherwise it was pretty straight forward.

The plan is to get these mounted and good to go with just spray paint, and then in the near future take them off and get em properly powder coated. You'll never know if some minor grinding is needed so better to just get em on now and worry about long-term paint later.

Weight is 73.2 lbs each. Probably 150 combined with hardware. Whew. They are available without the dimpled plate. I'm not a big fan of the plating, but, it adds more strength and as much as I don't like formed bumpers I'm probably not gonna have much of a choice. So might as well match the sliders to whatever bumpers I decide to run. (Currently I don't like any bumper I've seen for the 2016 and have already conceded that tube alone won't pan out.)

Getting them in place and installing...

I am certainly not a fan of this very large gap between the bottom of the door and the top of the slider. Rough measurement has this at a 2-3/8" gap. That is 2.375" of ground clearance... But, more on this later ;)

I do like the 2"x2" square legs. Pretty stout.

You can see tapered hardware along the bottom. The hex head bolt is an OEM Toyota bolt. Obviously I'll need to convert that and any others to a low profile / tapered bolt. I think ideally they should be tac welded once I'm satisfied with everything. Don't know if I like the idea of bolts alone. Probably this is just my old ways clouding my thoughts.

There is a stamped steel bracket whose sole purpose is to just hold two plugs. No wonder this truck weighs 4.4 thousand pounds! I'd like to scoure much of the truck for silly uncessary weight like this and get em removed. For now I just zip tied it up and out of the way.

All done!

I also like how the kick outs are muted. I was never a fan of the All Pro Hilux sliders because of how far out the kick out is on those but this is much less pronounced and I like it. Nice change.

Here is another shot of the gap between the door and the slider. I can stack three fingers between the two. Will discuss more on this later.

The dimpled plate does look great once installed I have to admit.

Bummer.

EDIT: Copied kjchubby's weights backwards!

I think I still lost, but you've reversed a bunch of the weights (mine included) for different people.................
