Is that the voltage regulator?

yes, the voltage regulator is the silver box on top of photo, igniter to the immediate left (on top of the coil).

Thanks!

I found a wiring diagram at autozone.com

It shows 6 wires coming out of the regulator.

How many wires are coming out of that regulator to the plug?

If it's 6, I wouldn't worry about the extra wire.      Probably a replacement regulator that's used for multiple applications and not needed for the truck.

What's the voltage on the wire while the truck is running?

It's a 6 wire voltage regulator.  But, the loose wire is not coming directly from the voltage regulator, it's part of the Toyota wiring harness (see photo).

good suggestion check voltage while the engine is running.   Thanks!

I thought it was the loose connector on the regulator you were talking about.......

does not read any voltage when running, no continuity to ground, no continuity or ohms to positive post.

Just wandered out to look at Steves 82'
Looks like that wire is a ground. Needs to go to the block. You can see that on Steves it goes to the back of the power steering pump bracket.

Thanks a lot!  You guys Rock!  That makes sense, that's why I could'nt find a place for it around the igniter, coil, or distributer.  Thanks again!
