fj45 tube buggy
« on: Feb 02, 2011, 02:14:26 PM »
So I am in the process of working and designing a fj45 based buggy.  I have the basic look figured out and drawn up using CAD.  (thank you school teaching me how to use it)  My brother is going to school to be a mechanical engineer and had to take a class where he learned how to do 3d modeling.  He is working on doing a 3d model of it now.  The biggest thing is to see if it is buildable.  My family has a couple of totaled 85 4runners laying around so naturally they are going to be the donor for the build.

some specs:
Toyota 22re or propane injected 22r
85 front axle
85 rear axle
rear disc breaks
transmission e break
On board air using stock a/c pump
4 link front and rear
(also toying with the idea of semi elliptical)
dual cases with maybe triple stick shifters.
The plans are drawn to use 42" tires may go 40"
Oh and a matching trailer

I will try and get the drawings I have on here.

Sounds sweet! Good to hear that you have a solid concept in mind. Seems like a lot of guys start off with a full body Cruiser and whittle them down to a dash and a hood.

You should be able to find a 40 front clip fairly easily, and just fab up a bed, cage, floor and be good to go!

Post up any other plans, details or pics, this sounds like a cool build to watch

The frist drawings of the buggy.  Sorry if the colors are confusing, each color is a layer and helps with keeping it organized.

My buddy did something similar, however he extended the cab in the process.

Love the idea...always thought if something happened to my truck, I would like to rebuild it using a FJ-45 cab.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and excitment for this project.  I just got a new motor in my 85 4runner so I might finally have some time to get some parts ready for the build.  I just dread the price tag as this thing is getting built.

SWEET DESIGN!  Looks like a "B" series landcruiser (land cruiser pickup).
Do you have any fj40 parts?  The axles off the landcuisers are super tough and awesome if you could use those.
1975 FJ-55 Landcruiser: pretty much stock with 31 x9.50x15 TSL's
1992 Extended Cab Pickup: 22r, weber carb, 51" RUF, F-150 rears, Aussie Front, Welded Rear, etc.

I don't have any fj 40 parts.  I wish I did.  my dad has an fj 62 that was rolled but he has dreams of getting a new tub for it and fixing it.  He has no time for that and it would be me fixing it.  I am hoping that I might be able to talk him out of the running gear in it and use it.

This is the matching trailer.  After dragging around a friends trailer behind a lifted 4runner i got sick of how bad it pulled.  The ruck was to tall and even with a 10 inch drop reciver the trailer would not sit level.  So I decided if I want to pull a trailer with a lifted truck I want a "lifted" trailer.  the idea is that it will have matching tires to the buggy, so 38 - 40's.  It will have a pintle hitch on it for more flex when needed.  I will build a tent frame that will slide in like a picket side on a flat bed that will go into the top.  Then sew a tent that will fit the top. The tail gate will open up and have a ladder on it to get in.

So now that my wheeling rig is totaled (dirt road+bad brakes+a roll over=dead truck) I decided I am sick of building stock rigs and I am going for the buggy.  I just need to track down a tube bender and some money for the steel.
