All Toyota - 4 Seat Tube Buggy w/Locktup Fab
« on: Aug 28, 2016, 10:16:04 PM »
This project began with the idea of taking a clean 2nd 4runner doing a 5VZ-FE swap and making a linked Road worthy, but trail dominant rig. I started with a clean 92 Runner w/a blown 3.0.. I quickly acquired a Ruffstuff front housing and set out to find a 5VZ donor. Shortly after I found a wrecked 98' 4runner. The runner had been rolled and the front end was badly smashed but the engine, rear end and trans looked to be fine.. So I took a chance and drug it home.. As soon as I got home a hooked up a battery to the donor and turned the key.. cranked over 3 times and started right up! Yes now the fun begins!!!..  I now set out to complete the rest of my drivetrain and purchased a set of double t-cases complete with a marlin 4.7 XD gear set.

--- This is where it all changes ---

On a slow weekend I decided to pull the 3.4 out of the donor.. It was sometime between then and looking at the IFS on the 92' when I realized how much work it was going to be to do what I wanted; 3.4 swap,  SAS - Linked front/rear impossible no.... However in the end I'd still be worried about body panels being crunched, glass breaking on the trail - Fuel cell fitment etc... It was then I explored the idea of building a Buggy... not just any buggy but a 100% Toyota buggy..  That's where Jason at Locktup comes in.. I good friend, and master fabricator.. it's time to take this idea and turn it into a reality.. I gathered the entire drivetrain.. now time to buy tube!

Buggy Spec's

All Toyota
-3.4 5vZ V6/ A340
-Doublers with Marlin XD 4.7 in the rear case (I know a doubler setup is overkill with an Auto but I already had it)
- +5 Width RuffStuff Front Housing, Yukon Zip Locker, 5.29 gears, TG Studdless Hubs, Frontrange Keyed Knuckles/Arms,
-3rd Gen Rear Housing, (from 98' Runner) 5.29 gears and 8' Spool
-4 - Link Front & Rear
-PSC Full Hydro
-115" Wheel Base
- 20" Belly Height
-4 - Seater (Rear Bench Seat for my Girl)
-22 Gal Fuel Cell
-39" BFG Reds

Here's the concept drawn in bend tech... Stay tuned for more details and updates..

Positioning the Drivetrain. Forgot the mention I was originally gonna go with the 5speed... till my buddies convinced me to go with the auto.. The Auto has since had a complete rebuild.

What made them recommend the auto?

We rolled some tube and started locating the width and arm bar height.. Using some Empi xWide seat seats for mockup, also found a used Jeep fold and tumble seat on Craigslist..

What made them recommend the auto?

After recommendations I did a bunch of research and posted some questions on other sites. I also spoke to Rory at RAD designs.. I learned the Toyota Auto is a very good trans.. also learned it's the same trans used behind the Chrysler (Jeep) 4.0 engine (Cherokee XJ, Wrangler etc.) Coupled with the Trans-Go shift kit, and the RAD Designs Winters Shifter the Auto is a viable option for the build... So I decided to take the plunge.. I've never wheeled an Auto but those who have love them..  It is also said the double t-cases are not necessary behind an auto.. just a single 4.7 case... I already had the case built so I'm using doubles..

P.S. - with the simple swap of an AW4 tail housing (the jeep version of the trans) you can bolt up an Atlas Case..

I'm liking this build sir. I respect the choice of all tyoda drive train rather than going LS like most do. Also the a340 is a bullet proof trans. You'll like it a lot. Wife's 4runner has over 300k on it with no issues. My 83 had 230 something no problems. I'll certainly be watching this. Can't wait to see it in double low with the smooth engagement of an auto.

Harvesting the rear housing... cleaned it up.. Lots of grinding.. Some mods I did on the rear housing.. shaved drain plug, added armor to the bottom side.. Saved and sealed the ABS sensor ports, modded so I could bolt up Sky's Disc brake conversion... Booger Welds.. good thing nobody will see em  :clap2:

Fuel cell mount is nicer (and probably worth more) than my whole truck. Sweet build!

I do really like the lines, good flow, its pleasant to look at. I'll be watching. Someday I'll get to building a buggy, not sure how I'll keep warm in 3ft+ of snow but hey its a buggy.

I think its from a CJ or Wrangler.. They call it a "fold and tumble" seat..

Back to work on the buggy..

Got a wheel and tire mounted up and mocked up. Installed 2" spacers in the rear.. Tacked in some rear support tubes getting ready to mount shocks.. and locate air bump cans, sway bar links, limit strap packaging.. Kinda tight in there but the 2" spacers help a bunch..
