Keith Black 22re motor from John's Foreign Engines?
« on: Jan 31, 2010, 09:47:21 PM »
Has anyone dealt with John's Foreign Engines in Washington state? I am thinking about buying a Keith Black 22re motor from them and just wanted to know if anybody had anything good  or bad  to say about them.

In circle track racing people HATE keith black pistons.  People will buy stock replacement cast pistons before anything by keith black.

Do you know what the problem is with them and/or why people prefer the yota pistons?

Do you want a already built motor?  Or ya looking to build your own?  We need some info here to help ya.  Cause when I was growing up KB was the bomb to have, in motorcycles and big blocks.  So, which leads me to believe you want a serious motor.  Just remember that anything more than 125hp in a 22re your gonna have to start tweaking the AFM, and stuff to get things to run right.  After that, your gonna need to start dropping some serious coin on standalone harness and efi/ecm modifications.

I think I saw you post about a 180hp 22re?  Start pricing stuff to make what you want to work. http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGear/  Then you will rethink stuff.  :yesnod:  Unless your pockets are very deep!!

I know a buddy that is pushing 225 hp in a 22R, and it's not a streetable motor after that.

Thanks to Cheesemaker, Cree and Jake for your responses. I am starting to change my direction more toward a 22rtec or possibly a 3rz. I was originally thinking I would buy the Keith Black Motor from John's in Oregon, but I think I might be better off to find a decent 22rtec or a complete 3rz set-up.
Any tips or opinions. It will be used as a daily driver and a weekend off-roader. My 87 runner currently has the 22re with a w56b 5spd trans. Just need more power than the stock 22re and have to stay Cali smog legal.

That was some good readin. Changed my mind. Need to find a GOOD new head. Gonna rebuild the short block and use a header and cat back for improved performance. Anyone got a line on GOOD heads and/or a GOOD short block rebuild kit with the oem style japanese rings?

http://www.engnbldr.com/toyota_heads.htm

This is what I'm thinking on doing with my 91 when I get around to it next year.  Plus, I'll get one of Engnbldrs heads that has the oversized valves in it.

Go to LC Engineering and get there power package.  It has cam, intake throttle body, header, and free flowing intake pipe.  They claim 20-30 hp.  Ad that to Ted's head with O?S valves, and you should see 30+ hp for sure.

yep, i second the engnbldr kit, but you can find good parts at most NAPA stores or your local machine shop.  good machine shops can usually source parts directly from the supplier saving you some coin.

they like to break and it is not just a 22r problem it applies to SBC too.  KB pistons = ticking time bomb

after tearing into my engine for the third time i was told Kieth Blacks are meant to be run for one 500 mile race and then tossed.
